Local generally pricey gun shop has one of these in very nice condition for $995. This gun has thumb hole stock. Pretty sure I do not want the (cheapo) scope and (possibly good) mount. Questions-

As package- Is this a good, great, or OK price?

How much is claw mount worth if I part it out? I do not know manufacturer of mount, but there is German writing (starts with "S") visible on underside of mount. Does this mean it is an HK mount?

How much is a set of furniture to replace the thumb hole stock and (if necessary, forearm)?

Gun looks nice. Is there anything specific I should check out for wear and tear?

Please and thanks for prompt and insightful replies!

$995 is a good price for the rifle with a scope package.

Not enough info to venture a guess on the mount and scope set up but someone would probably buy the scope package if you made the price right.

The SAR8 is a Portugese version of the HK-91.

To change the stock out, you would have to replace the Portugese parts with US made compliant parts.

To do so you would have to replace the trigger pack, bolt assembly, and all furniture with US made parts that are available from PTR
http://www.ptr91.com
You would also need replacement magazine bases and followers to continue using 20 shot magazines as these parts add to the compliance parts.
5 and 10 shot magazines could be used as is.

It would probably be easiest to replace the whole trigger group with one of the newer navy style polymer trigger groups.
Total cost of the replacement parts would be around $450. HTH

The SAR 8 was made in Greece on HK machinery and imported by Springfield.
Keep the forearm, it should be wide w/bayo cuts.
It's a good deal for the price.

Early pre-ban SAR-3 and the first versions of the SAR-8, the one with the really clunky thumbhole stock, are Greek.
The later and last versions of the SAR-8 are made in Portugal.
These are identified by the much wider thumbhole section and a fairly skinny hand grip.

The last versions of the SAR-8 had a funky American-made cast aluminum receiver. They are far less desirable than the stamped sheet metal versions.

Bought it:D. It is made in Greece, and has wide foream w/bayo cuts.

Shot 20 rounds of 20 year old milsurp out the back door. Grouped about 4" at 100 yards shooting at a NRA 50' pistol target (meaning I could barely see the target and the front sight post completely covered it:)) Should be fine with good ammo and visible targets:cool:

I HATE the thumbhole. Please tell me where I can buy a decent stock and grip w/o going broke. Also need a flash suppressor. There was a funky/fugly thing on it.

Got it for $959 OTD, sold the scope and claw mount to a buddy for $200. Please tell me I did OK at $759 net out the door.
