I've got a question that I am hoping you might be able to provide some help with. I've gotten the urge for the last year or so to do some competitive rifle shooting, but I"m really not sure how to get started. Can anyone tell me what the progression usually is to get to the Camp Perry shoot? Not that I think I'll be good enough anytime soon, but I would like to know.

Any help would b really appreciated.

Respectfully,

AR

ps: if it matters, I'm in Anchorage, AK.

A good place to start would be to read through the NRA and/or CMP rules. That will give you an idea of how things works.

Also, attending some local matches is a good way to get some good firsthand knowledge, but I can't speak as to any kind of matches in your neck of the woods. You might want to try and contact the NRA to see if there are any affiliated clubs in your area.

As far as Camp Perry, there's no pre-requisites for shooting in the National Matches. The CMP does offer what is known as the SAFS (Small Arms Firing School) in which the USAMU teaches the basics of marksmanship skills with service pistols & rifles. You also shoot in an excellence in competition match. Be advised that SAFS usually fill up quickly if you plan on enrolling.

If you want to play the long range - Palma and F Class games here is a related fourm to join. Both this one and the National Match forum have a lot of good information on how to get started, equipment and upcoming matches.
