I can't be the only survivalist w/ more than one 7.62 x 39 rifle (2 SKS's & 1 AK) & lots of cheap ammo stockpiled. Supposing Armageddon strikes, I would love to have a cheap single shot like the NEF or H&R Handy Rifle in this cartridge for deer & hogs. I would consider a bolt action, but am limited on cash & need to cap this around $350.00. I'm also a leftie, so I prefer the single shot. I have several decent scopes that I can put back into service, so this does not need to be a combo. I don't feel comfortable taking 150 yrd. shots with the AK or SKS's on wild game---They are all "Minute of Barn". Looking online, I see no offerings in this cartridge. Any ideas?

Rossi makes one. Saw an example a few months ago at Gander Mountain. Ran about $200 IIRC.

Rossi makes this one (MSRP $238):

Rossi Centerfire Single Shot Rifles are available in all popular hunting calibers. The barrels are drilled and tapped to accept Weaver-style scope mount bases and have adjustable sights as standard equipment. Rossi rifles incorporate transfer bar technology to help prevent accidental discharges and feature a manual safety.

Buds Gun Shop has 3 models available online ; 2 Remingtons, and a Rossi.

I've thought about buying one also ; or the CZ 527 bolt action.

There was a handi rifle chambered for 7.62x39 but it was quickly discontinued due to issues with igniting hard recessed primers found on steel cased ammunition

I don't feel comfortable taking 150 yrd. shots with the AK or SKS's on wild game---They are all "Minute of Barn".

then you need a better SKS or AK

Guns are fine, my eyes are the problem. I have tried several different scope options on the sks & AK, and none of them hold zero well enough for me to have confidence in them for long-range shooting, and I didn't really buy these rifles to scope anyway. I am man enough to admit I prefer a scope for taking game @ 150+ paces.

the side mound found on Saiga's is as sturdy and holds ZERO as well as anything

I would do any of them the remmy, the ruger, the nef, the rossi, or the cz.
the rossi will be cheapest, the ruger the most. I htink I like the remmy's the best though; they have express sights on the rear.

I know this is an old thread, but it looks like H&R is selling 7.62x39 barrels for the Handi Rifle again:
