Didn't vote
I'd want "Other" and suggest S&W 908 or Sig P239
in 9mm luger both single stack/slim profile 9mm luger
For me, I like the new offer: S&W 1911 Compact ES .45 ACP
Officers frame with 4.25" Bbl./SLide.

You don't need a class to get your License to Carry Firearms in PA.

I chose the Walther PPS.
I won't carry anything smaller than .38 Special and you didn't specify whether the S&W had the lock or not. I'd never use an S&W with the lock to defend myself.

I voted for the S+W. You can carry it OWB, IWB or in a pocket, making it the best choice as your first (at least for now only) carry gun. 90% of my carry is with a lightweight j-frame. Add the 642 to your G17 for now. You can add another "carryable" auto as your next purchase.

I carry a Makarov which is larger and improved PPK.

I carry my 642 in a Uncle Mike's Sidekick pocket holster, #4. Cheap, sturdy and does the job. I like synthetic material holsters as I believe they don't retain moisture like leather does. Also the material is soft so it's comfortable.

Either of the Walthers are a good choice. I voted for the PPS here because it provides some additional bang in either 9mm or .40S&W, vs. the .380 for the PPK/S. But I personally carry a PPK/S every day, even though I own two PPS models, one in each caliber. I'm used to the PPK; it's like an old friend.

I must have missed the reason you wouldn't just carry the Glock if it works well for you.

Because Glocks seem to be ND-ing all over the country lately.

Of the choices, the 642. But, why not a smaller Glock? I am no Glock fan but you are familiar with the platform so it seems to be a no brainer/easy transition.
Because Glocks seem to be ND-ing all over the country lately. Negligent being key here.

I see no evidence of any kind that Glocks are NDing any more than any other gun in proportion to how widespread their use is. In any event, the OP didn't say anything about that. He says he has one and likes it, and is planning on getting some advanced training. Blaming the gun type for NDs is just like blaming the gun for crime. Blame the users.

Some cars handle better than others, thus are safer from occasional negligent acts. Some airplanes handle better than others. Some chainsaws handle better than others. Some guns handle better than others. Glockenspiels handle like crap.

For carry purposes it's hard to beat a Glock 19. And if there is an ND, it's ALWAYS operator error. Small, light, 15+1. I know it's not in the poll, but the OP says he's familiar with Glocks.

Saying "Glocks handle like crap" is an expression of opinion, not fact. There certainly isn't a shortage of people who disagree with you.

For what it's worth I went through a weeklong shooting course with my USPc. We fired over 1,000 rounds and purposely didn't clean the gun all week in order to demonstrate reliability. No malfuntions.

I just bought a small frame revolver. I carry it all the time every time because of it's convenience. Hardly notice it's there, and I get the power of .38spc +p.

My daily carry is the 642 with laser grips in a triple K holster. Sorry I don't have a pic of the holster to show but it's well made and priced right. I like the 642 because of it's simplicity, light weight, overall reliability and ease of maintenance.

I voted the 642 because they are great little guns and are easy to carry.
I didnt know Glocks handled like crap. I better go change all my expert qualifications then...

From the list you provided, I chose the Walther PPS since I own one in .40 S&W. However, I really like the Smith & Wesson J-Frames. But if I had to choose between the two, I would take the more powerful of them. I love my PPS.

Every Walther I have been around has been a jam-o-matic. I prefer a commander or officer size 1911 for cc, but if you are looking for something smaller go with a Kahr PM9 or PM40, or the little J Frame from the poll
