Protecting receiver finish

Are there any good ways to protect receiver bluing when you do something like bolt a peep sight on the side of a lever gun? Or attach scope mounts on the top a deluxe 10/22, with the pebble finish? I'm trying some black electricians tape on the back of a Williams peep sight on my Marlin 39A. Thanks.

Masking tape works for me.

Quite frankly, I have never worried about it.
I generally use Blue Lock-Tight under the contact points.
Because when I mount a receiver sight or scope mount, I intend for it to stay exactly where I put it for a long long time!
I can't see any kind of tape under a scope mount as being a good thing!
As an aside, I have taken receiver sights off of very old Winchester lever-actions, and the only bluing left on the whole receiver was protected, under the sight base.

Williams sights are made out of alum. Doubt it would hurt steel.

You might check the area of the mount or whatever for sharp burrs that could mar the finish, but otherwise I agree with rcmodel. Very often an area under a sight or mount will be the only original finish left on a gun that has seen a lot of use.
