How much are shotgun hulls worth?

October 5, 2003, 06:08 PM
I have access to a shotgun only range where I've been able to pick up a sizable number of used hulls. In two trips, I've picked up about 500 hulls of various makes. I could easily pick up several hundred more each range trip.

I don't reload for shotguns--should I keep them/try to sell them?

There are hulls - and hulls!! I keep stuff I have shot from past and collected some if they are what I want. One local gun shop supplies shells at good price to a club and does a deal whereby they get empties back .... not sure what they sell for exactly but if good stuff then I think maybe 4c each.

A lot of hulls are not good for reloading ... I am currently using some Rem black ones with an 8 star crimp .... parallel formed. With wads I have and charge I use they work great and last for many reloads.

I used to use Win ''AA'' in the past .. compression formed and also IIRC 8 star crimp .. they were good. Also a Rem peters blue case with 8 star was another i liked way back

If you can collect and sort ..... and find out what reloaders may want then, you could make a few Bucks IMO. But you won't get rich!

It all depends on the brand. Some ones imported stuff toss it. Winchester
AA's are good. Maby 2 or 3 cents a piece. This is what I use for trap
shooting they last a long time. Federal and Remnington hulls are good to.
But they all need to be the same hull or you will have a night mare on
your hands. You will need a different load for each different hull.Did that
when me and my dad started to reload them each hull a different primer,
powder charge and wad most of the time. Gets confusing fast..:banghead:

Best to just pick up what you plan on using and pitch the rest. At the
indoor range that I work at we just pitch all the shoot gun hulls. If they
are from slug rounds pitch them to

There are definitely some Win AAs in there, as well as Remington. But it sounds like it's probably not worth sorting 500 hulls---plus, I imagine they would be fairly difficult to ship since they are so bulky.

The shipping should not be bad they are light when empty. Get the buyer
to pay for the shipping.

Other wise don't waste your time.

On the other hand $30 for 1000 hulls= 2 lbs powder:D

AA or STS hulls will bring 4 cents each in 12 gauge, 6 cents in 20 and 12-15 in 28 and 410 gauge.

All the other hulls are basically just junk from a resale point of view even though lots of them load well.

The only hulls that I've seen commonly for sale are AAs and Federal Gold Medalist.

Anybody tried reloading the hulls from Fasteel?

I have saved quite a few over the last coupla duck seasons, in anticipation of getting into reloading shotshells.
