Has anyone here made 1911 grips out of DuPont Corian? I can get scraps of it from a contractor, thinking about trying to make a pair like these

You could probably craft a nice set given the workability of the material (and those pictures are proof) but what purchase would they give to your grip of the weapon? I'll guess they'll be slippery as snot...

Actually making grips for a 1911 is pretty easy. I have made them on my router table using a pattern flush cut bit. The contour can be made by carefully rounding them on a belt sander. The two step holes are drilled by transfering the hole locations from a template or another set of grips using a transefer punch. The holes are then drlled using tow Foreseter bit of the proper diameter.

I can do a nice write up if enough folks ask. I just done't have enough time to go into the whole thing right now.

I guess if I was going to do it I'd build a jig, drill the holes first, and then use the holes to fasten the material to the jig. Then I'd run the while thing through the NC mill. Fast, repeatable, & to tolerence. You could even checker them that way.

There's a pretty good write-up on grip making here;
http://blindhogg.com/

I wondered myself how slick they would be. Suppose they would be that much slicker than smooth finished wood?

Dogsoldier, when you have the time do a write up for us, second opinions are always welcome!

Problem with corian is that it is fairly brittle. Women would like the idea since it's available in many colors, they could change grips to match their dress. That reminds me of an aluminum framed revolver that was anodized in 4 or 5 colors apparently to please the women.
