I needed to disassemble my Pietta 1862 police to install a new hand and spring. I screwed up somewhere in the reassembly. Does anyone have a link or know of a thread that gives a step by step reassembly process. Any help would be appreciated.:o

Can't be that hard, it's just another Colt SA.

What are you having problems with exactly?

At the top of this (Blackpowder Shooting) forum is a sticky thread titled: Black Powder Essentials. Within that thread is another thread titled: Colt Type Revolver Disassembly by mec. Halfway through the first post in that thread, under the word Remounting, is a step by step description of the reassembly process, reprinted here:

Remounting:
1. Replace hammer and hand first being careful not to compress or overstress the hand spring'
2. Replace locking bolt. It is necessary for the split "ears" on the rear of the hand to ride in front of the cam on the right side of the hammer. This is best accomplished by placing the hammer in its lowered (forward ) position. The outside "ear" presses against the inside of the frame while the active side presses against the hammer in front of the hammer cam.
3. Replace Trigger. This is easiest with the hammer pulled back.
4. Replace trigger /bolt spring being sure that the long "finger" is on the step on the front of the trigger. Some springs appear to be too short to replace. In this case, index the long "finger"/leaf of the spring against the step on the trigger and press down so that it will stretch out and allow replacement of the screw.
5. Replace front porton of grip frame and the main spring. It is often best to leave some slack in the screws-including the mainspring screw- until everything is in position. then tighten all screws.
6. Replace grip and back strap of grip frame. This may require loosening the screws of the front portion of the grip frame just to get all the screws lined up.

In principal: Avoid overtightening the screws and the nipples. It's easier to tighten them often than to watch one crumble before your eyes because it's frozen in place.

the first time you take it apart and put it back together it may seem a little tricky. but after you do it a couple of times you realize its pretty easy. when you go to put the hand spring in you need to press the spring in it will make it easier to put in

Now i hate to say it. But you need to take it a part a few more times and put it back together to get familiar with it. I have it so i can take it apart clean it and have them working in about 10 minutes.

Thanks scrat. Now my wife thinks I'm really insane. I'm sitting across the table from her while she is doing taxes for folks and I'm disassembling and re-assembling, disass...you get the idea. Well she asks what in the blazes I'm doing and I say "practicing!" I get the sideways glance and the "you're nuts" head shake and then she say "go practice changing the baby's diaper." But really, you are dead right. With a little practice I have no problems. Just like my DI suggested..without the push ups!:o
