to drill, or not to drill, that is the question

ok, PLEASE, no lectures about the guns value, or collectors status, or anything like that. i have a Browning Auto- 5 that i am contemplating putting a sling on. BUT, i am hesitant to drill into the back half of the stock to drill a hole for a swivel stud. i have a seperate cap for the front (i did not screw up the original) and i would really like a sling. is there any other way of accomplish this without drilling? the gun is in good condition, not pristeen, but good. and i will never sell it, and i certainly hope my son never will either.

I've seen slip-on slings for shotguns at my local gun shop. They have a rubber cap thingie for the butt and then a loop that goes around the barrel. No swivels required, black rubber, costs about $20. no drilling required.

"leash"
You can leash the butt stock and put the sling on the leash.

He means that there is a product you can buy in which the sling would wrap around the end of your buttstock. Like this, Vtac buttstock adapter (http://www.vikingtactics.com/pop1a.html)

Browning Auto5 buttstocks are readily available, so it's not like you're making a modification that cannot be undone. They are also NOT CHEAP. The average price for a NOS Auto5 buttstock is $160+ expensive.
The RamLine stock (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=536689) comes with a rear swivel - why not just spend the $60 to get one of those for knock-around use?

I think this is more of a leash type sling:

I had to carry my dog back to the truck one time and a piece of rope used in similar fashion (on the shotgun:)) worked quite well.
This is a pretty nice slip on rig:

You could also put a steel plate under the butt pad and have the swivel attached to it. I don't know how well the gun would mount tho.

The hardest part of drilling for a sling swivel is locating the hole EXACTLY at the top of the underside curve.
Do you have access to a milling machine or a drill press with a table that can be moved precisely, at least on the Y axis, or front to back?
If you do drill use a size same as the screw shank or a little larger. Too small a hole might get you a split stock.
With that forward cap piece you'll only have to locate one hole - cutting the chance of a screwup in half.

I drilled my A-5 for swivels years ago, as well as several old Winchester lever-guns, a Browning .22 Auto, and everything else I own.
Those loop type stock cuffs are a PITA, and will eventually wear the stock finish, which is worse then a properly installed swivel stud.
They all should have came with swivels in the first place.
