yeah... pretty much any brand that loads them offers buck shot as one of their varieties... I have never seen a brand of 16 that didnt...winchester, federal.. they offer slugs as well...

buck shot should be fine, but I would steer clear of any slugs...

Actually you can shoot slugs or buck through a full choke barrel with no harm to the gun. The only thing that may suffer is the group or the pattern. In days past the full choke ruled the field. Many a deer has fallen to foster style slugs fired from a full choke gun. Personally I wouldnt cut it. I would either have it threaded for chokes, get a slug/buckshot barrel, or the most likley, leave it as is. What type/ model is the gun?

It is a mid 60's M37 featherlite Im only considering shortening it because the new ones are some what over my budget. & I have heard that old Model 37 Barrels are not always interchangeable. I was under the impression that if I used buck shot in a fixed full choke barrel that it would damage it.

I have some #1 buck in my safe with my old old Iver Johnson. I think its Federal brand.

If using a shotgun for home defense, my favorite is a 20 gauge.

+1 on the federal #1 buck for HD. I have an old SxS 16ga that I cut down to 18.5". Even with no choke, it patterns well at 12-15 yards (the longest distance inside my house).

No damage will occurr as long as the gun is in good working order. As I said in my previous post. The full choke Ruled the field in past generations for every thing hunted. Shoot all the slug and buck you care to torture youself with (LOL):D I have an Ithaca 37 in 20 ga but I've never considered a second barrel for it, so I don't know what all it entails in fitting it up correctly. I would shoot it as is. In my humble opinion it would be a shame to alter such a classic. The only ammo I would stay away from would be Steel or Tungsten Waterfowl shot. It has a well established reputation for being hard on thin barrels and tight chokes :)
