I`ve seen adds for "Original South African,new,30rd. magazines" as well as "30rd. american magazines". The SAs are $39.95 the others are $18.95. It`s hard to justify with 20rd. G3 mags going for $3ea. but I wouldn`t mind having just one...if they actually work. ;) Marcus

Bear in mind that an awful lot of stuff advertised as "South African" isn't! South Africa never issued either the G3 or the CETME as a standard weapon, so it's highly unlikely that they'd have made magazines for them...

Why buy overpriced "South African" mags when you can buy real German mags for under ten bucks?

Some South African countries used Portuguese-made G3s left over from central African civil wars.

The FAL-like "Namibian" G3 stock sets came from somewhere in southern Africa. These stock sets are excellent: HK-quality easy.

The "African" magazines are crap. I have 6 or so 20rnd versions and one 30rnd version I purchased just for fun. All are blued, have no markings, and appear to be somewhat simplified. The followers are, blued rather than chrome/nickle plated, rough, and poorly made (the century replacements are far better).

The best G3/HK-91 30rnd magazines are the type that look to be two 20rnd mags welded together. IIRC, these were sold through B&B Guns out of North Hollywood in the 80s.

Never seen a 30-rounder in the service. I imagine it may be a bear to go prone with a G3 magazine that's long enough to hold 30 rounds.

Now, there's a 50-round drum for use with the G8, which is the magazine-fed version of the HK21 as used by the German Federal Border Guard. That would be a cool critter to find, although it may be a bit on the heavy side when loaded. It should fit the G3, as the magazine wells on G3 and G8 are identical.

Doh, I figured as much. :banghead: I know the 20s are a much better value and much more practical. I just wanted one 30 for range blasting and well just for the hell of it! :D Guess I`ll pass on em though. Thanks for the info! Marcus

Well I`ve already got a big pile of assorted 20rd. G-3 and CETME mags and CTD just had "american 30rd. G-3 mags" on sale for $10ea.! I had to try one. Well just as suspected it`s a cheap POS. It looks like a cheap clone M14 mag but longer and with a collar on top that allows it to lock into a G3/CETME. It locks up fine but the feed lips hit the bolt carrier. I`m going to tweak it until it clears and otherwise mess with it and see if I can get it to actually work. If not I paid $10 for a nice paper weight and conversation piece, big deal. :p Marcus

30rd. mag update: I had to file the top of the feed lips a bit to clear the bolt but afterwards it hand fed round fine. Today I took the CETME to the range and put 90rds. through the $10 30rd. mag and it worked great!!! :what: Hey sometimes even I get lucky! ;) Marcus
