I am itching to have an AK or SKS. A local has a '59 Romanian SKS for $350. I think the price is OK. When I go and look at it, how can I tell its Romanian? Thanks.

Import laws require that the country of origin be stamped or engraved on the firearm.

The Model 59 is not nearly as common as the 59/66 and will not have the grenade launcher on it. If the bayonet is present, it will be a blade type.

I'm not sure what a decent Model 59 brings now. I've had one for years and also a 59/66 but I haven't kept up with prices... especially now that panic buying has set in.

doubs43, you're thinking Yugoslavian, not Romanian.

Romanian SKS serial numbers consist of AA1111, with a two letter prefix and a four number, arabic numeral suffix. On left receiver, date of manufacture, e.g., 1959, appears directly after serial number. Stock finish is generally dark gloss lacquered. Arrow-in-triangle proof should appear on left of receiver. Triangular cartouche may appear on buttstock. Rear sling mount on keel of buttstock. Minor distinct characteristics in rear sight -- "I" at base of calibrated range. Folding blade bayonet. No grenade launcher or sight. Standard length cleaning rod.

Romanians are THE BEST SKS. Heroes of the Revolution of 1989.

As to price, I paid $139 for mine in 2000, but I'd pay $350 for a nice one now.

The seller says it was made in 59 not that it is a model 59. Thanks for all the help.

DoD, you are correct. My mistake.

Here's a pic for comparison - Yugo 59/66 on top, 1960 dated Romy in the center. The bottom one's an Egyptian Rashid, sort of a hybrid between the SKS and the Hakim.

SOG had Romys recently for $250 to $350 depending on grade.
