A friend of mine was leading a group of hunters in an area outside of Yellowstone last week in an elk hunt. He met a group of three hunters in an adjacent camp one morning and invited them to come over and visit in the evening. The group of three hunters never made it over because there were only two people left in the group by evening.

Hunter shot during fight

Associated Press

CODY, Wyo. - A Cody-area man died after he was shot during a hunting camp quarrel over who would kill the first elk, authorities said.

Marty Buffington, 46, was shot in the knee Thursday and bled to death, the Park County Sheriff's Office said.

The case remained under investigation and charges could be filed soon, Sheriff Dave Doyle said.

The shooting occurred in a remote part of the county near Hoodoo Creek, just east of Yellowstone National Park in the Crandall area.

"There were three men in a hunting camp, and they'd been out hunting and an argument broke out over the elk hunting and who was going to shoot the first elk," Doyle told Casper's KTWO-TV on Friday.

"It progressed through the day and when they got back to camp, two of the members of the party became involved in a physical confrontation and from there a shot was fired. One subject was shot in the knee and it severed an artery."

Authorities were not notified until Buffington's companions hiked out of the mountains Friday morning.

The names of the companions were not released.

The body was to be flown to the State Crime Lab in Cheyenne over the weekend.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the altercation, Doyle said.

Y'know, when you run across such an example of flaming idiocy, it's right at being superfluous to even comment...

Here I am going to poke fun at the incident in Ft. Worth where the officers shot a man in the shoulder twice as the man was trying to kill himself with a knife. Several folks pointed out that shoulder shots were non lethal. So, if shoulder shots are non-lethal, than a shot to the knee is non-lethal as well, right? Obviously the shooter simply intended to preclude the walking abilities of the hunter who was shot, thereby assuring that the shot hunter would NOT be the first of the group to get that first elk. Right?

There is a good rule of thumb for selecting hunting buddies a friend once told me. Hunting buddies should only use weapons where the caliber is lower than their IQ. Don't hunt with people with IQs lower than caliber. Beer effectively lowers IQ and maturity.

The dead guy probably would have made it if they hadn't gutted him out...

My word, arguing over who gets to shoot the first elk? No alcohol involved? I seriously doubt that!

Regarding "non lethal" shoulder shots. Tell that to the families of two friends of mine that I served with in law enforcement in the late 60's. Both were killed in the line duty after being shot in the shoulder. One with a .22, the other with a .25.

over an elk? is an elk worth all the b.s. that's bound to come from this (plus the legal ramifications)?

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the altercation, Doyle said. If so....wouldn't even want to play charades with that bunch.

So sad that the eruption occured with firearms around instead of rocks or somethin like that.

And the average IQ in Cody goes up by about .3 (or .6 if the shooter gets sent up)!
