Ive got a quick question- can you safely shoot a load of lead pellets out of a rifled barrel? say size six shot out of a .50 barrel.

YES If you use a shot cup. A shot cup is a type of wad the keeps the shot in the cup until it exits the barrel. The sides of the shot cup can be cut down to a desired length to give a desired pattern. You would of course need to have an over shot card as well.

Keep in mind the fact that the shot load will be spinning as it exits the barrel, resulting in an ineffective pattern beyond more than a few feet from the muzzle.

I suggest you shoot a few patterns of your desired shot load at 5-foot, 10-foot, 15-foot, and 20-foot distances from the muzzle. Then you can easily determine the maximum effective range for your intended purpose.

Good luck.

is it possible to make your own shot cups or possibly use a sabot wad?

when you load a black powder shotgun you put a first wad in front of the powder, the load, then a second wad, but because of the rifling in my rifle I guess doing it like that would be a bad idea?

It's safe to do it that way.
But whether it's a bad idea or not is up to you to decide.
Here's a recent thread about loading shot in a single shot pistol:

i think it maybe perfectly safe. IF not why do they sell snake loads. Look at cabelas and do some research in the reloading section. They make and sell these soft like plastic bullets that hold shot. made in different calibers. So you can reload the snake loads they call them or even buy them. they sell them in 38's 357, 44's and last time i checked they were all rifled

I just tried it, made a quick paper shot cup and put a wad on either side of it. the pattern was rediculously wide but I'll just be messing around with it not really hunting so that'll do. a friend of mine game me an old bag of size four lead shot he found in his garage so I,m going to have a blast:D with this way of loading my hawkin.
