.22 MAG cases expanding....

Hi all... While at the range yesterday I ran out of .357 and .38's so I switched over to my third favorite pistol round... the .22 MAG and I had something happen that had never happened before. I went to eject the empty cases from my SA revolver, and I had one case that was stuck in the cylinder. I had to removed the cylinder, and pry the round out gently with a screw driver.

I only had six rounds left, so I loaded up and the same thing happened. When I got home, I cleaned the guns and then took another live round, and put it in each cylinder one at a time, and they all fit just fine. So it seems like the cases bulged. I also noticed a lot more grainy powder residue then normal.

I was shooting CCI mags... anyone else ever experience this?

The extractor rod didn't work?

I have had the same problem with a semi-auto 22 mag... I am not sure what to tell you.. I cant figure it out either... the reciever is fine, the gun is clean and well maintained... and it has baffled the best gunsmith I know.. perhaps the ammunition is to blame..the cases were so badly expanded that I had to hold the slide back and put a rod down the barrel to force it out.. nearly needed a hammer to do so... the extracted case was badly scored afterward... I dunno..

Armed Bear... the extractor wouldnt work for the rounds that were expanded.

I am baffled too PT1911 - The good news was after cleaning, when I put fresh rounds in they were fine so it is just the fired cases. Not sure. Not the best quality gun... it is a Heritage SA revolver but it has never given me fits and I have put 1000's or rounds through her...

Oh well... All is well...

Wow.

I've had to tap the rod with something now and then, but that's pretty well stuck.

I'm curious, too.

I'll wager you had something built up in the cylinder, and when you cleaned it you removed it. Wouldn't take much.

Probably just fouled chambers. Not very common on .22 mag. revolvers though. Is it possible someone fired some .22's thru it prior to your problem?

Ummm.... 351.... there is a good chance I did that. I thought I cleaned it well, but maybe not. Could I have harmed the cylinder?

No it won't harm the cylinder. I've seen people do it on more than one occasion mostly because they didn't know any better. I did it once or twice myself with no ill effects.

I don't recommend it by any means. The mag. case is bigger than a .22 and most likely you will have spit cases.

I had the mag cylinder in for yote hunting, never remember to take it out, and puts some .22 LR's through it.

Ah ah! To quote Jamie on 'Myth Busters", "Well there's your problem."

22lr shorter than 22 Mag. Burnt power and gunk in the last, oh, 1/2 inch of the cylinder ... jussstttt enough to make the 22mag case just a bit too snug to eject.

That will do it every time.
