Since I am in Ohio and can only Open carry.. How does one open carry in sub freezing temps without looking like a commando wannabee?

I'd say you wear a coat when you're outdoors.

Ya know that was mighty blond of me. Wear a short coat! Unfortunately I dont own any that would be short enought to expose a belt worn holster and gun. I dont know if I would want one that short. Are there any other options?

Make yourself comfortable.

When it is cold, I wear a coat. One of adequate length to make me comfortable.

You could try one of those cop/security coats with a gun-slit. If you shop around, you can get one that's just plain black or dark blue. Most have fake fur collars for some reason, but on most you can also take the fake fur collar off and have just a normal one.

With no badges, patches, or fur collar, one of these coats is pretty discrete.

Best I can think of anyways...

Greeting's All-

I don't advocate the "open carry" program's; because I
like for the element of surprise to be on my side during
a hostile confrontation. Thus, I recommend some type
of garment for covering the weapon at all times.

Dan,

He cannot carry concealed.

One must decide what is right in his own mind. "He cannot" is not correct. "He may not under the unconstitutional ruling of his socialist government" is more correct.

One must decide for himself.

In Colorado at least, the gun is considered unconcealed if just the tip of the holster shows beneath the coat. Check your state laws.

I guess that's when you have to sling a rifle over your shoulder since it's hard not to conceal a handgun while wearing a coat. :D

this is exactly right.

How about one of those holsters that hangs below your hip and straps to your thigh at the bottom?

He specifically asked how not to look like a wannabe. A tactical thigh holster is pretty mall ninja-ish. :)

Ok, no thigh holster then. Can't you get busted for open carry because it incites panic in the public?

Mexican style is where you just stuff an un holstered gun in the front of your pants...

I open carried in Ohio the same way I open carry here in colorado. (concealed from everyone but the cops) I just let it lay on the seat in the vehicle and holster it upon exiting the vehicle. It may not be lawful par se but is certainly prudent.

I once ran out of gas in columbus and after having gotten the gas can outta the back I leaned in the driver door and stuck the combat commander in my pants 'mexican style' and turned around to find myself face to face with a columbus cop that I hadn't heard roll in behind me. a little theatrical frustration coupled with some subtle rearranging of my coatline and voila', rode down and back to the gas station with the cop in the front seat, babbling and sweating all the way. Monopolizing the conversation helped I think. If you're too quiet, they'll suspect that you're up to something. I didn't want to declare it even if not concealed that time cause I was like 2 ft from him when the time to do it was there, and the surest way to turn a cop on you is to startle him while close. Real nice guy that cop. I like to be away from my weapon when I declare it, if possible.

many police holsters have room for a jacket without
obscuring the holster.
Try the local cop uniform shop.

I wish I could open carry.

I've got some nice flap holsters for my walther p38, CZ 52 and 1911's

The gun is completely concealed in the holster but Texas law states the fact that I'm carrying a gun can not be discernable by the average person.

Who the heck is the average person?

To answer the question I would look at a low ride hip holster.

Or just sling a mossberg over your back.

First, don't rag folks for open carry, I occasionally give up the Tacticality to make a politcal statement.

Second, be creative. This situation obviously calls for a Freedom Arms or Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull worn in a vertical crossdraw scabbard over top of the coat. What you mean you don't own one already? Get thee to the gun store. Thinkin' is all backwards. Don't look for new ways to carry your guns, look for new ways to carry that demand you buy new guns! :D

is it worth the daily hasle of getting cited for inciting panic though...

this would be my rig for open carry. most would just kinda look at it and laugh or not care since it looks like a joke. joke is on them though, i'm pretty darn good with a single action six shooter!

I say thigh holster. Screw them if they think you look like a mall ninja. It's their fault you have to open carry in the first place.

Some say it is so.

Actually, I've been carrying quasi-illegally (concealed/open) for pushing 20 yrs now and the worst thats happened to me for it was getting escorted out of K-Mart and even then it was only b/c I wouldn't pull it out of the holster and unload it for the well meaning employee.

Yur jes bein paranoid. :D

The answer's simple: a heavy-duty Zip-Loc bag, slung around the neck (outside the coat) on bungee cord, containing your handgun! :D

Geeze officer, I have the gun in my hand to comply with open carry when wearing winter wear because the coat covers my holster. When the coat comes off the gun gets holstered. Now you say I am inciting panic and all these paniced people are making me think sheeple will never understand.

How about a paddle holster being clipped onto a jacket pocket? Some of my coats with some added reinforcements might actually be able to do this and allow drawing the weapon without having to hold the holster with one hand.

I would love to know if ohio allows just the tip of the holster to show since a few of my holsters would work with one of my winter coats. I have long winter coats and a few shorter ones.

Does anyone make a gun with some velcro on it? Ohio has a big market for this, stick it to the flannel shirt when inside and stick it to the coat when outside. Keeps lint from gathering as well.

Oh well, I live in ohio and can't believe the edjumacated supremes said what they said.

Maybe it is about time to unload some junk and sell my place and move south, east, west, or north. Somehow the surrounding states get by ok.
