Can anyone tell me if parts for the Iver Johnson carbine are interchangeable with real GI issue carbines? Were they built to the G.I. specs? Are they a decent carbine? All opinions will be appreciated? Thanks, Ron W

Plainfield Machine Corp, produced M-1 Carbines from 1960 to 1977, when they were bought out by Iver Johnson Corp.
They manufactured them at least until a 50th Anniversay model in 1993.
Early Plainfields were built using nothing but surplus internal parts.
Later, as supplies ran out, they and later I-J made some of the parts themselves to "close-enough" GI spec.
So yes, GI parts "should" fit.
Universal Sporting Goods also made M-1 Carbine copies, but theirs were slightly different and some of the GI parts won't fit them.

have a differrent barrel and gas piston setup
also the operating handle, has two springs and guide rods to keep the assembly in alignment
the trigger group may interchange, the parts in the trigger group, well they look differrent
the bolts will interchange, mostly putting a good surplus bolt inplace of ..........

I have an early IAI M-1 that was made with a leftover Iver Johnson [civilian] receiver, and the Choate M-1 carbine pistol grip stock wouldn't fit it because it's not the same exact size as the military receiver.
Although some of the other original external parts may fit it very well.

That's not an IJ Carbine. That's a Universal. IJs will accept USGI parts.

I agree. USGI parts fit on my My IAI (built on an Iver Johnson reciever) fine.

IJ made and marketed both Plainfield and Late model Universals until they went out of business themselves in 1993.
If your carbine has a toggle for the bolt hold open, two return springs and a stamped op handle, it's a Universal. No milsurp parts other than mags will work in them. Milsurp parts will fit in a Plainfield.
