Enilst in the military with a supply MOS and they'll eventually send you to armorer's school. If you think supply is too restrictive, you can always ask for a Ranger option and go to a high-speed unit where you will do all of the soldier boy stuff in addition to being the unit's armorer.

WA,
1st thought: Most (if not all) gun manufacturers offer "armorer" courses, geared towards the LE armorers, but perhaps they are available to anybody with a checkbook?
2nd thought/question: What is the difference between an armorer and a gunsmith? There are gunsmith courses available at community/vocational colleges or by correspondence (unknown quality).
That's where you could pick up the skills. I don't know what process you would go through to get the job. I guess you could just call up your local PD and say "I am interested in being an armorer for a LE Dept. What do I have to do to get the job?"

Go ask the local Police Dept recruiters. I think you'll find you must be a cop first. At least to work as an instructor. The military route will be faster, then when you get out you can go apply to be a cop weapons tech.

Not all armorers are sworn officers. It all depends on the agency. Some agencies also have armorer/rangemasters. It's the best of both worlds since you live & play guns. I believe the chief armorer for the CHP is a graduate of one of the CA Jr. Colleges (Lassen).
School? Go to a JC and take the two year program. Become a gunsmith and from there, seek positions (via police newspapers, magazines and internet) for armorer positions.
