Great news! Welcome to the 870 "dark side"! :D

How much did you have to pay for the new 870? I know that around here, they're in the $500-and-up range (when you can find them... ).

Post a picture for us!

Thanks for the enthusiam, Preacherman! I paid $464 - it was a sale through a distributor used by my FFL (met the guy on TFL and he is a Member here as well).

Will post pics!

I wanted good wood... 26" is the minimum length allowed at my local range for busting clays (sound restrictions), seemed like a good compromise between a dedicated trap gun and a HD shotgun. Of course, later I'm sure I will 'specialize'.

Dunno if 870 fans are a cult, mayne we can organize something and get a tax break. If the Moonies can...

Congrats, Sven, enjoy the new toy. It's only fair to warn you though, while 870s do not breed, they do multiply.

After shooting your gleaming new WM for a while, you're gonna think maybe some HD application is in order. Next, a beater police turnin shows up, and a 30" barrel for your WM for trap, and then you get invited on a deer hunt in a shotgun only area.....

It's indeed a slippery slope, but a lot of fun....

Hey congratulations, and it is WOOD stocked to boot. :)

Cult, nope, bunch of us just lump ourselves into being CWGs...covers all the bases.:D
It's an attitude, no restrictions, no membership reqs...nada. buy guns, BA/UU/R.

OK waiting for a pic, report...enjoy!

Dad is in town for a visit and some quality time... we will be shooting this shotgun for the first time together on the Trap range at my club this weekend. Hopefully the first of many good memories to be had with this, my first shotgun.

Not sure which choke to use for Trap... time to dredge the archives and/or wait for a helpful post here.

Nice, Sven, very nice. Pretty wood.

As for trap, many folks use Modified with their 870s. I prefer Full because I take my birds out a ways. Also, Full taught me to get on them tighter. Ammo is inexorably connected, The better the ammo, the less choke one needs. More folks are overchoked for trap than under.

Do hit the patterning board soon.

Enjoy...

30 years ago, my best friend and hunting pardner bought a 12g 870 wingmaster. We were teenagers at the time. He never bought another shotgun until last year, when he added a 20g 870. He has a son coming up but except for that, he never saw any need for another shotgun. wasn't anything he couldn't do with the one he had.

Calvin - Absolutely, is Tuesday trap night, or just a night the lady lets you free to play? ;) Either way, lets do it.

Last night Dad held and inspected the gun, racked the slide, observed excellent safety as he sighted in, then started telling stories about how Grandpa Ollie (who I sadly never got to meet) got my Dad and uncle involved in competitive trap as kids. Never knew that!

Funny how the stories start coming out as soon as hands hold a weapon ("boy does this bring back memories").

Today we are going to go create new memories. Don't have a shell holder bag, so we'll have to improvise... gonna dig around and find something suitable.

Hey that looks familiar! ;)

Beautiful shotgun Sven. The price you picked it up for is definitely pretty good for California.

Go bust some clays.

Sven, Sunnyvale is open Tuesday nights 5:00 to 9:00 to the general public. They usually have a good crowd show up at the trap ranges.

Sven...nice piece..for a shell bag I sometimes use a carpenters nail apron(about two bucks each) at home depot, never saw anybody laugh at it yet,but at six foot three and 300# they prob do it behind my back...Jack

Had a blast up at Sunnyvale today - the rain let up and pops and I busted clays, shot rifles and pistols, too.

For dad, first time shooting a shotgun in 15 years - I think he's got the bug again. Was like riding a bike - he got several 5s. My score improved by 100% between my first and second set of 25. Not saying much when you are a total beginner, but I'm getting the hang of it.

None of the Perazzi guys even made fun of me... nice to see that they miss, too... and have $4,500 more into their guns, at the same time!

Time to hit Walmart and stock up on the bulk packs. I'm hooked for life!

Don't know what it is about 870s, but I just love 'em. I have shotguns that cost more than my 870s, but when I go by an older/used 870 in a shop, I always have to handle it and look it over. The Wingmasters are just great.

Man, you're making me excited! I pick up my gun on mon.!

You got a beautiful piece there, Sven. Form and function:D Did you shoot at Sunnyvale? I'm thinking of trying out Metcalf sooner or later, they have trap and skeet over there. Glad you're enjoying your new toy!

Sven, I haven't gotten to the bottom of my first cup of coffee, and am grinning like a possum eating hot roadkill. Glad to see your post. Hope you and Dad do it again real soon.

A coupla things...

You mention bulkpacks. A good choice for non reloaders. But, the price of maybe 10 bulkpacks or less will set you up with a manual, scale, MEC 600 Jr, and components. I can crank out 100 rounds of ammo as good as is sold in less than an hour without sweat. Cost per box now runs $2.80 or less.

870s, like many other shotguns are memory triggers.

Mock not the Perazzistas. Nice folks, just a hair misguided. One good used Perazzi=one good used 870, a two day seminar with Gil Ash, Daro Handy, etc, and lots of ammo.

Steve, there is something about 870s. Can't quite describe it, but I'll walk past a rack of fine guns to examine a nice old WM.

Wingmasters have a tendency to multiply in numbers over the years. :D

Dave:

You couldn't have wiped the smiles off our faces if you'd tried! I can't think of a better way to have spent some quality time with my pops.

Hopefully, someday I will share time like this with my yet-to-be-created kid(s), and hopefully with the same 870.

Flatfender: I'm almost out of room in my safe, and there is little room for a larger safe in my current abode. I may end up buying a house just to house a larger safe. ;)
