Restaurant Carry Bill Advancing in New Mexico!
Please Contact Your State Legislators Today!

Yesterday, Monday, March 9, the Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly approvedSenate Bill 608 by a 5-4 vote.

Sponsored by State Senator George Munoz (D-4), SB608 is NRA-backed legislation that would enable Concealed Handgun Licensees (CHL) to protect themselves in restaurants that serve alcohol.

Because the committee vote was so close, we anticipate that the Senate floor vote will be as well; therefore, its very important that you contact your State Senator and urge them to support SB608 when it comes before the full Senate for consideration. Remind them that SB608 does NOT permit CHL's to consume alcohol while carrying -- that is, and will continue to be, against the law!

Also yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on House Bill 105,the House version of the restaurant carry bill introduced by State Representative John Heaton (D-55). The committee did not take final action on the bill and committee members are working with the sponsor on amendments addressing issues brought up in committee about how the bill would be administered if it became law.

Please contact your State Senator and the members of the House Judiciary Committee TODAY and respectfully urge them to support your self-defense rights by voting for SB608 and HB105 when it comes before them for a vote. Links to NM Legislature page and the language of the law.

Will essentially make NM a 51% state.

And it was authored by a democrat. Wow.

Just read the house version. It specifically sets a 60% threshold.

Senate OKs handguns in liquor-serving restaurants

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexicans carrying concealed handguns could legally go into restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages under a bill that passed the Senate on Wednesday.

The legislation, supported by the National Rifle Association, was approved over the objections of lawmakers who said guns and liquor don't mix, especially in family restaurants.

The bill was passed on a vote of 26-15 and now goes to the House.

Its sponsor, Democratic Senator George Munoz of Gallup, says people who are licensed to carry concealed weapons don't want to leave their guns in their vehicles in parking lots, where they could be stolen.

He says it's about preventing firearms from getting in the hands of people who are criminals.

Opposition said guns & liquor don't mix and I totally agree. It would break the blender and mess up the finish on the gun.

Oh good. Thought this was some new type of carry inside the waistband without a holster.

Can anyone help with a follow up on this bill?

The last I heard the Senate approved it 26-15. I much preferred the Senate version as the house version actually limited it to those restaurants which only had a Beer & Wine license.

Thanks,
Robert

It looks like it's on the House agenda this week.

Awesome. Thanks for that.

Where can I find that info on my own?

Thanks,

I found it under Agendas and Calendars, page 7, item 47.

I thought it was up for this week but it looks like the legislature adjourned for this session on Saturday. I can't find any info on whether they got around to this bill though.

Sounds like we may be on hold then?

I'll start looking into this more. I hope this gets through. I can't see why it wouldn't. Both chambers had a version of it. It looked like there was better than average support for it also.

We lost out.

This bill never reached the floor thanks to House Speaker Ben Lujan. He's anti gun and had his own agenda, even tried to slip in one of his own bills at the last minute, probably pressure from some high paid lobbyists.

Sad. What a fool.

Try try again.

That's incredibly disappointing. I just got back from Santa Fe. The no-BUG rule and the issue at hand are two reasons I haven't moved there. The complete list of reasons has about four items.

Both laws are absolute nonsense. I hope it can be made right eventually. Hopefully I can get on board next time.

Very upsetting. The alcohol and BUG rules mess up the NM experience.
It only takes one fool.
Look at Wisconsin because of Jim Doyle's 2 vetoes.
At least NM has CC.

One-gun-only and restaurant-carry are two things that've been kneecapping New Mexico on my list of vacation spots.

Sadly, I expect CA to add a nonresident option before these get fixed... which means it'll be a while. (Darn, and a Route 66 roadtrip is on the to-do list someday!)

But do they allow Mexican carry in Mexican restaurants?
As long as they don't have a liquor license.
