A shortage of Primers & Ammo

Last night I checked Dillon, Midway and Powder Valley and found they do not have any large/small pistol primers. The range I shoot at has not been able buy ammo from there usual distributer. Those who have ammo will sell only to police departments. I think we are in real trouble.

kostner - We have been in the situation you just discovered for weeks, and months for some components - started even before the Presidential elections and ramped up significantly in January.
I check the local shops every time I go into town, and haven't seen rifle primers in months. Pistol primers are scarce, but I do find them once in awhile. All I can offer is, "Keep looking......".

Pistol primers are easy to get here in Ohio. I have yet to find a shortage. I sure wish it was easier to ship. I would ship them to you. We are paying $26 total for cci500/cci550's. I just bought 10 boxes off the shelf.

Thank Kabelas is out of stock too.Fourdollarlbill do any of the shops have a web site. And you are right about Hazmat fee's plus shipping. Hope this isn't a sneakier way to reduce reloader. And a few years of ammo shortages ???

I just ordered 5000 Wolf SR Magnum primers from Wideners. They are going fast.
If you buy 5 or more boxes of a thousand they are $20 a box. With shipping and HazMat I paid a little over $26 dollars a thousand.

Just checked a local gun shop. No primers except for magnum, shot shell, and a few small pistol. All are now marked up by $10 from $25 to $35.

There are one or two of these threads every week. When people buy more than manufacturers make, it's called a shortage. Been this way for months. Read over the last ten pages of threads here and you'll see what I mean.

Grafs has some large rifle primers, notably #34 and a few large rifle. Also a few boxes of small pistol. I didn't check everything, just bought what I needed.

Come to Vegas. My favorite gun store has 50,000 rounds of 9mm and 43,000 rounds of .40. Another place I frequent just received 60,000 SP primers.

Just received Large Pistol primers today from Midway. Natchez had small pistol primers as late as yesterday. I have not checked them today.

They were sold out by 5:30pm EST yesterday. I bought 5k myself. I don't handload .223/5.56mm yet, but a friend and I are going to start, so I decided to buy some now since we plan to start in the next few months.
I placed my order about 4:15pm EST, and as I said, by 5:30 they were gone. They had about 150k when I made my 5k order.

It's just like bread and milk right before a snow storm or hurricane. Everybody thinks there's going to be a shortage, so they create one.

No kidding!
I'm tired of all of the comments I've seen that say "maybe this is the government trying to stop reloaders". As of yet, no laws have been passed, and no production cuts have been ordered by the government. In short, WE (the shooting community) have caused this shortage!
Still, it is more than a little bit frustrating at the moment. I'm down to 800 small rifle primers, 100 large rifle primers, 100 large pistol primers, and 0 small pistol primers. Sadly, I go through far more small pistol primers than I do anything else... and I could easily use up 1,000 of those.
I can't find ANY of the above listed primers in ANY local stores in recent memory.

To everyone whose been buying components for speculative reasons, thanks for buying them. It's great to not be able to find primers. I've got tons of brass, lots of powder, a brand new case of bullets, and no primers to make them go bang. It's a great feeling to not be able to find components, because on the off chance someone is maybe going to load a caliber later they decided to buy up all the stock.
Off to go continue to make phone calls.

I've been thinking about reloading but this panic buying has me so frustrated that I haven't made up my mind yet. The last thing that I want is to get all of the equipment and have it set idle because everybody is hording the components. Man, I hate politics.

True, but it doesn't seem like loaded ammo is doing much better at this point. I figure this will all blow over eventually, but it sure isn't easy to find things for now.
Interestingly, it seems to me that the panic buying didn't hit reloading components until a bit later. AR-15's were hard to find from November through January, but I've started to see them coming in stock again. But, during those months I didn't have too much trouble finding components. Primers seem to be the biggest issue right now, as no one has them.
I finally found one box of Federal small pistol primers (never used Federal before) at a small local store. These have definitely been on the shelves for quite some time, as the box is dated 1999!

I'm in sales and have (and stop at) a lot of different stores in my area. There are components out there, we just get used to walking into most any store and getting anything we want.
Next time you find primers, powder, or bullets buy a bulk lot instead of getting a week's worth. I've got over 10k primers in my garage right now. Probably 25-30# of powder, and maybe 5-8k of bullets. Another 12-15k of brass.
I'm thinking that, in the future you may run into some REAL shortages of stuff.
Actually, I could use some more small rifle. I'm down to my last 2,000.

I just looked on gunjoker at the primers and almost pissed myself laughing at the screwballs paying out rediculous sums for primers.
Winchester Small Rifle primers for 100 bucks. Sounds like a good deal.

I honestly think the shortage/hoarding is starting break:) last week I picked up 6 boxes of Win LRM and left some on the shelf as my economy stimulation plan. The Local Dicks is restocked on ammo the few local gunshops are starting to stock and actually got in a couple AR's and my favorite tax free store starting to load up the racks with FN PS90's and EBR's:D
