Now, THIS, is a rifle shot!

Woman, 84, held in 220-yard shooting

MURFREESBORO - An 84-year-old woman fatally shot her son-in-law with a rifle from more than 200 yards away in an apparent family feud over rural land, prosecutors said.

Gertrude Raines was arraigned Monday on second-degree murder charges and remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $75,000 bail. No trial date was set.

Charles Davis, 62, was shot in the abdomen from 220 yards away with a .22-caliber rifle while he was working on the roof of a cow shelter, authorities said. The rifle did not have a scope.

At that range, she was probably going for a head shot and hit the victim in the abdomen. Still good shootin for granny!!

It doesn't say, however, if she did a spray and pray.

Hit in the abdomen? Must of hit some major plumbing and suffered massive blood loss?

And those 22s can bounce around a bit.

My guess is , since he was on the roof he was hit and fell. The fall would do more damage than the bullet at that range.( he was 62)
30-40 gr bullet 1200-1300 fps at 220 yards would be like a bee sting.

Not to be picking nits, but does anyone know for sure if the rifle was a 22 rimfire? I mean, 223s, 22-250s and 220 Swifts are 22 caliber as well.

And if it was a 22 rimfire, with iron sights no less, seems to me like someone with more clout than Grandma wanted him dead, too!

maybe the fall off the roof onto his head had some part in his departure ?!

I think it was a justified shoot. She had heard the son-in-law singing over Christmas, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer". She saw him up on the roof, probably preparing for a meeting with Santa to plot the running over. She acted in legal self-defense of her life knowing that the son-in-law was planning on her getting run over by a reindeer.
