Teen Rescued From Locked Safe at Kmart

By Associated Press

October 6, 2003, 4:22 PM EDT

WOOSTER, Ohio -- An 18-year-old who squeezed himself into a 4-foot by 2-foot safe at a Kmart was rescued by firefighters and a locksmith.

The teenager emerged short of breath and sweaty, but otherwise unharmed after at least 10 minutes inside.

The Wooster Fire Department received a call at 9:16 a.m. Saturday and had the teenager, whose name was not released, out by 9:25 a.m., Lt. Joe Linz said.

The teen and another 18-year-old, both Kmart employees, had been playing around, and he decided to see if he could fit in the safe, Linz said.

Employees attempted get him out by using a combination, but it wouldn't open, Linz said.

After firefighters called a locksmith and attempted to use pry bars to open it, the combination was tried again and it worked. The teenager refused to be transported to the hospital.

The only safe I can think of that fits those dimensions and can be bought at Kmart is a gun safe. So I'm wondering if any of you that have kids and a safe have considered the possibility of this happening? (When I say kids I mean those young enough to not know better than to do something like that. I wonder what explanation those in the article have.)

Rosie O'Doughnut will be proud that the safes sold at K-mart are child proof.

They should ban all safes large enough to hold anything larger than the size of an infant lest someone else get trapped.

You see how many resources did we just waste on that, ahem, shall we say slow elk of the herd.

I am of the take warning lables off of everything mindset and let the stoopid people of the world have at it. They will either learn through painful means or simply cull themselves from the heard. I really don't have a lot of patience for stupid people.

Mistakes yes.
Screw ups yes.
Occasional brain farts...sure.

But climbing into a safe is just plain braindead. I could let Jr. slide if he was say 6 maybe even up to say 10 but 18 YEARS OLD AND I ASSUME SOBER!!!!!:what:

Slow Elk, nothing more, nothing less.

If they hadn't been able to get the combination to work there would be just enough air to slowly suffocate. Unable to get a decent breath, knowing you are going to die, not being able to do anything about it, trying not to panic, unable to not panic...Who in their right mind would climb into a safe? I was once 18 and stupid but I was never that stoooopid. Stay tuned to the Darwin Awards, this kid is a definate future candidate. And his friends! Yikes!

Or....he will get on the talk show circuit and become a politician or other criminal as soon as he is of age.

At least we know that the guns can't escape to cause murder and mayhem

Hmmm .... wonder if we could get a few "do it for the children" politicians to volunteer to do some gun safe tests for us ....?

Here, Ms Fineswine, climb into the safe and let us show you how secure it is. It will only take about 15 minutes ....... :neener:

OK, squeezing in can be acceptable as fun, but his buddy is pretty stupid to spin the dial. Dunno who is dumber or who is going to get killed in this case.

Jesus, so far in my dubiouse background; I threw a waitress into a 6' deep ice maker, locked a kid in a refrigerator for about 15 minets (he used to stand inside it to clean it, and it was'nt air tight) And closed the gate on a fellow worker who had decided it would be fun to look around the bottom of a trash compactor. Me an this kids buddy have much in common!

Wow, that is bad.

Lots of safes have interior release handles, so you can't get locked inside. I guess this one didn't :banghead:
