I know it's nothing huge but this is my first confirmed bow kill ever. I hold to the old adage "anything with a bow is a trophy."
Was hunting in a swampy area and had this doe walk out just before it was too dark to see. She walked to within 40 feet or so of my tree and I whistled softly at her to get her to stop.
I actually heard my arrow hit her, kind of like a deep "THWUMP" sound.
She ran about 70 yards and I watched her fall over.
Not wanting to make any mistakes, I waited about 30 minutes before even getting out of my tree. (I hit another deer with my bow and hastened down from my tree only to have him jump up on me and run off when I got close...I've learned my lesson.)
I looked for an hour and couldn't find her even though I knew I'd seen her fall over. Went back to my truck and got my propane lantern and looked for another hour with the same result. There was a little bit of blood where she was when I shot her and I found my arrow (some blood on it also) but no trail to follow at all.:confused:
Went home and came back out the next morning at first light to look again and found her not 20 feet from where I thought she'd fallen the night before! I'd walked all around her for two hours. (just goes to show you how different things look when it's pitch dark in the middle of a swamp)
Oh yeah, the reason for no blood trail...I hit her just beside the spine from the top down. Arrow went completely through her and out her stomache so the exit wound was clogged and the entrance wound was on top of her...therefor, no blood trail.
Be patient boys, if you've never gotten one with a bow...it only took me 8 years to get my first!:rolleyes:
