Hi all,
What was one of the major problems with the early M1 Garand's sights system?
Thanks again
Clancy

referring to the windage wandering/coming loose and the subsequent addition of the lock bar?

or something else delightfully obscure? :)

I'll give you both--the Lock Bar didn't work so well, and...

The troops would mistake the front sight ears (originally almost upright but thicker than the FS and round-topped) for the front sight itself.

That's equal to 20 clicks or more windage. NO good. Marines, who used to use a very thick USMC front sight on the Springfield, were reportedly more likely to make this major aiming error.

Thus, the more obviously curved front sight ears were born!

I finally got one!

Hi all,
Grump you are correct Sir. Hi all,
"the front sight protective 'ears' were straight and very nearly the same height. shooters were mistaking the 'ear' for the front post and were off by quite a bit..."
Thanks again
Clancy

Yeah, using a sight ear for aiming gives you something like 30 clicks windage!
