Wal-Mart asks "Is this for a Handgun?"

Why does Wal-Mart ask if the ammo I buy is for a handgun?
If I'm buying .22 lr I guess I can only use it for rifle if I designate that at the time of purchase.(Yeh right)

You have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo.
Just say no ....
Or tell them it is for your SMG :neener:

Because their employees are drones and the computer system must be satisfied you are not under 21 and buying handgun ammo. If you answer "yes" the next question will be for ID.

Just say no, or tell them it's for a machine gun :D
The really annoying part is when your buying 10 + boxes of ammo and the register keeps beeping and asking that same stupid question, I wonder what it would do if you alternated yes and no in the answer field for the same ammo?

When I am getting .22lr at the one in the metro area, I always tell them both and then stand there grinning while they try to find the "both" button.:D
If I am at the supercenter out in the boonies where I live, the old timer behind the counter and I usually strike up a conversation about guns, or squirrel hunting, or some other thing. He then rings me up, double bags the boxes, and sends me on my merry way.

They wouldn't let me buy .22LR when I was 20! So I called the store manager (generally very competent people btw); he was highly POed. In fact he was so POed that he wanted me to give a physical description of the cashier so that he could re-train them.
Anyway, I just started telling them it was for my AR-15 .45ACP upper. :D

Seems like we get this gripe every 3 months or so.
The REAL reason Wal-Mart asks this question is....
You can buy rifle ammo at 18, but you must be 21 to buy pistol ammo. So, if you are buying ammo for a pistol, they need to card you for age 21. If you are buying rifle ammo, they can card you for 18.
No vast conspiracy here.

If it bothers you that much just go to the gun shop and you won't get hassled. Otherwise just say NO !

Or just answer ...
"I dunno .... how do you tell the difference ... "
or ...
"Beats me, it's for my six year old"

The regular clerk who knows me was training a clerk and the question came up, I answered "sling shot", the regular clerk busted out laughing and the new guy had no idea.

I like the "Both" reply.
I wonder if that'll make the clerk pull the flashing light chain for a manager.
Theres nothing like hacking off the 10 or so people in the line behind you.:D

I tried to pull that when I was 20 buying some 40 S&W for my Glock. Clerk asked for ID, I said it was for a rifle, but he wouldnt buy it! :cuss:
So I had my buddy who was behind me in line (and 21) pay for it.

You know, that is a very stupid question to have and a very stupid law (who says that most gun laws aren't stupid).
As far as I know, they make rifles in ALL PISTOL calibers!
Name me one pistol only caliber?

Look at the bright side. Used to be, when purchasing ammo, they had see your DL and log the information. With the exception of filling out the 4473, it was almost the same as buying a firearm.

It's real funny when the dolt behind the counter asks you for every box of the same ammo. Then you through in a yes or a no just to mix it up a little. Sorry sir the first two boxes were for my carbine this one I must tell the truth is for my handgun :D
Moparmike
October 7, 2003, 07:55 PM
Do they make a carbine in 10mm?
Note to self....

Yes, they make 10 mm carbines.... the mech tech carbine conversion unit is one example. They also make it in 38 super, 40 S&W, 9mm, and 45 acp and 460 rowland.

So you could buy basically any caliber generally associated with pistols as long as you have a carbine in that caliber?

Chaim, the Bizon SMG is in 9mm Makarov. You may be able to find a semi-auto version of it somewhere.

Come to think of it, most of the dolts behind the counter wouldn't know a pistol cartriage from a rifle catriage. So, in a way, this is all for naught. They are just parroting what the computer asks, so just say, "Rifle" all the time. If they give you any grief, then take all the types of rifles that you can find in those cartriage types and then show them that it's for a (insert rifle here).
That's what I would do if I were 18. But, far from it right now so I don't have to worry :D.

Ill usually have an adult go with me to get handgun ammo (which is really embarrassing when your 19, btw). There was this one time that I went into Wal-Mart to get some 9x19 for my P99. I was asked the question and I answered "rifle" in hopes to aviod the whole "must be 21" thing. Lady looked at me and smartly remarked, "really, because this is handgun ammunition". I politely informed her that while 9mm is a very popular handgun round, there are many different carbines chambered for the round. She just looked at me, asked for ID and rung me up.
Oh yeah... quit bagging on the Wal-Mart employees. If you want knowledgeable staff and top-notch service go to your local shop (where you may get 1 out of the 2). Im working retail while going through college and let me tell you that its not real fun. You are constantly moved around and you may be put in an area that you know nothing about because someone called out. Most people dont seem to realize that when you just barely make over minimum wage and get treated like trash all day, you tend not to want to take pride in your work. I have gone so far out of my way to help customers that it isnt even funny, only to get cussed out by the next customer. Realize that most Wal-Mart employees dont work there because they want to.
