Let me start off by saying that I don't know a damn thing about shotguns. I was looking online and I want to buy a shotgun that is cheap and is easy to maintain. Is this (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/42607) a good shotgun for a 1st timer?

I owned a maverick for over 5 years. It was my first shotgun and I recently gave it to my brother since I now have the money to upgrade. Go for it it sis a great first shotgun!

I picked up one used for cheap a year or so ago. I chopped the bbl down to 18.5 " and keep it loaded with 00. I picked up another bbl for hunting use. It's very reliable, not polished but reliable.

I have owned and opeated a Maverick 88 since 1990. No issues, ever, goes BOOM! on request every time.
Well, I don't count getting dunked in the drink as an issue with the shotgun...Long story about nothing...punchline is "Oh yeah, Foggy, right over there somewhere, the creek drops off real quick to about 6' deep..."

I have two of the Mavericks. I think they are a fine shotgun. Thousands of rounds through each of them and they go bang everytime.
Mine has the 30" Full Choke barrel which I need to get out and get ready for turkey season.

I own one and would buy another one in a heartbeat. They are great shotguns for the $$$.

I've actually been considering a Maverick Model 88 with the 18.5" barrel to live in my pickup. Our family friend who owns the sport shop said they sell a lot of them and have never had a problem.
From what I understand they are a great value. I guess the biggest difference between them and the Mossberg 500 Persuaders is a few parts in the action are from Mexico and it doesn't have as many bells and whistles like a heat shield and collapsible stock.

Picked this 88 up for $120. With light, side saddle, and butt culff, it is a one stop shop for home defense. It is the primary heavy weapon for quick reaction day or night.
