well, for the longest time i was at a toss up. it was between the mosberg 500 and the remington 870. so me and the wife are out today (i was going to go buy some powder to reload some .223. thats a joke, trying to buy powder...)

so we stopped off at the big5 up on convoy. (whe went straight to the shoes... go figure.) i'm back at the rifle section looking at the selection. limited selection at that store.
first thing that caught my eye was a 20 guage rem 870 w/ laminated wooden stock. then i looked at the mosberg silver series over/under. nice shotty. that's when i noticed something that just didn't look right to me. it was a mosberg 500 with 2 barrels... in my head i was like huh??? then i noticed that the second barrel was just attached with 2 pieces of sheetmetal and a wingnut. i looked at the price and it was the same as the rem 870. i started to hand it back to the guy behind the counter. thats when i noticed the other side of the tag. $269.99. i walked around the store to find my wife, then i showed it to her. she didn't say a word. (i took that as a "OMG here we go again.") but no looks or anything that would have me think "oh no you don't! not another gun!" needless to say i pick it up in 10 days.

this is my first shotgun. i do own a few other firearms though.

now i have a question...

can i put a tube extender on the mosberg like you can with the remmy?

Sorry, no extender, The nut on the end of the magazine tube is part of your barrel structure.

The Rem 870 does have provision for extender.

If someone can show to me with evidence of ability to use a Extender on the Moss, I am open to it.

can't be done easily, only option would be to get a 590 mag tube and thus barrel too.

Only way to extend magazine capacity on a Mossberg or Maverick is if you have the 5+1 models, and swap the magazine tube, magazine spring and barrel for the 7+1 or 8+1 parts...IIRC, the mag follower is the same for both. After you buy all those parts, you are getting close to the price of a whole new shotgun.

Never worried about it. Mine's plugged to 2 rounds, anyway, so I don't get a ticket.

ok one more question...

seeing as how this is kommifornia, i won't be able to hold this fine new piece of steel for another9 days.

does anyone know if the mossberg 500A is a fixed choke?

The 18.5" should be cylinder bore. The sporting barrels are all interchangeable choke.

Wife's Bantam 500 with 22" barrel 20 gauge has accu choke. Right now I have the Imp Cyl choke on there for slug duty. The other two, Mod and full are sitting in thier choke bags.

If you got the combo like I assume, the short barrel is cylinder bore (as stated previously). The field barrel is choked (forget exactly which) and does not allow swapping out as it is not threaded.

If it doesn't have the swappable "accu-choke" tubes, most likely fixed choke is Modified.

By the way, those 2 pieces of sheetmetal and wingnut.... They make an excellent tactical flashlight holder to mount to the barrel : -)
