Hey there,

we had a thread a while back on the 7mm08pistol. now that THAT is resolved, thanks for the info by the way, I am working loads for the 7-08 pistol, primarily for white tail deer next fall, and target in the meantime.

I have found a lot of info on the web but trust high roaders and look forward to any advice.

PPL have mentioned quick burning powders, some said 4895, others even varget.

If you have a load with varget that would be ideal because i could share that with other cailbers and it save me buying multiple powders if possible.

Thanks in advance,

st

According to Lyman #49, the highest velocity in 12" & 15" T/C Encores with a 139 grain bullet can be obtained with IMR-4064, followed by IMR-3031, AA-2460, and IMR-4895.

IMR-4895 is noted as being potentially most accurate.

Pretty much the same results with 154 grain bullets too.

As an aside, none of those powders are particularly "quick burning", unless you compare them to slow Magnum class powders.

I use IMR 4895- sorry I don't have my loadbooks around- but I wasn't at max. I've had good luck with 139gr Hornady bullets for accuracy.

I'm using a 15in encore- harvested a nice doe this past season with the combination. it was a clean through and through hit, taking both shoulders. distance was 30 yards, full broadside.

because the bullet passed through completely, I cannot comment on how the bullet reacted to the hit, and to weight retention. I can say that I think it is actually a bit much for whitetail, and I actually wanna cook up a lead bullet load for next season in the 7mm-08.

i have used 120 gr sierra prohunter from my rifle with 45.5 gr of H4895. this is a good hunting load and i have killed red deer with it. looking at quickload it is good for 2730 fps in a 15 inch barrell.

46 gr of N140 is similar.

46.5 of imr 4895 is showing 2822 fps.

46 gr of varget gives 2740 fps with the sierra load oal 2.738 in. i reckon this would make a good hunting load

Now i am not a ballistician but i think the 120gr prohunter would be ideal as it is not as robustly constructed as some of the bullets mentioned. it also will make the most of the short barrel.
The recoil will be steadier in a pistol.

I hunt with the h4895 and n140 loads and find them accurate and deadly in my model 7 (18.5 inch barrel)
