I was just looking at the Springfield Armoury site at there 1911 line up and was wondering if anyone has thought of this configuration before.

I wished I would have saved the email but I inquired about them building a high capacity, 6" long barrel, full length dust cover, and with the picatinny rail on the bottom of the dust cover (like the Operator version) setup for 45 Super. They replied that they could do it. It would cost between $1,500 and $1,900 with standard parts. They would require 50% down to get started and that it would take a minimum 4 months. This was about a year ago. So..... yes, sounds great!

I can't think of what it would be useful for. It wouldn't make a good "game gun" (it would either be against the rules or wildly inappropriate for most shooting sports I can think of), hunting gun (wrong caliber, no need for hi-cap or rail) or "tactical" piece (excessive bulk and impractical optics).

Get an STI for the same money and they probably have them built already.
Shoot well.

Have to agree with Sean there. With anything, you need to ask
yourself: "What is it for?"
On the other hand...it WOULD be an unusual piece, and if your
aim is to own, shoot and enjoy it just for the sake of that...and
you have to money for the endeavor, I say go for it!

I was planning on making it a bowling pin gun. The club where I shoot doesn't allow comps or electronic sights but anything else pretty much goes. I wanted something with more beef than a 45acp, more heft, longer sight radius, more front heavy like a European style 22 (that's why the rails), a wider grip for large hands, and if I change the recoil spring, I can still shoot reg and low power 45acp. That's what I had in mind.

the only reliable hicap 1911's i've seen are the STI/SVI guns.

OK, that makes more sense to me now. I was trying to figure out all the things you'd hang on all those rails... :D
I'd skip the "tactical" frame rail thing and just get a long dustcover gun, since you just want it for the weight under the nose of the gun anyway... I don't think you'd attach anything there for a pin gun. I'd also suggest going with 10mm Auto instead of .45 ACP for a double-stack, ramped barrel gun... the 10mm will be more feed reliable in that configuration, and will knock down the pins with more authority. I'd also skip the optics (since you can't use electronic sights anyway) and go with Bo-Mar type sights with a fiber optic front.
With that in mind, an STI Edge would give you most of what you are looking for. It would also be legal for IPSC/USPSA Limited class. Or you could use the SV Gunbuilder to spec out exactly what you want.

There are several IPSC gunsmiths building 6" longslide "Limited"-type pistols, that is, a high-cap SV/STI frame, long or short dustcover, and a lightened 6" slide.

Andrew, Kimber/BUL double stacks are reliable. Mine is anyway. 4,000 rounds at this point. Only malfunctions have been from dud Winchester primers.
I'll second what some other folks have said. Go to the STI webpage. (don't know it off of the top of my head) Check out the Edge 6.0. It has most of what you are looking for already. Cheaper than going full custom, plus you can find used ones out there, but they are rare.

I've never seen them at the match, so i have no basis for comparison.
