Hard chroming shotgun bore?

I was interested hard chroming the bore of my Mossberg 590 barrel (smoothbore). Im assuming this can be done, correct? If so, any suggestions on the best place to have this done?

The reason I am interested in this is due to the comparison between my 590 and my Benelli. The Benelli bore is much, much easier to clean and seems to be far more resilient overall vs the 590.

So, any suggestions? Thanks.

Does Mossberg offer this option?
I'd ask them if they do, or get their recommendation on whom to use.

You may also need to bore out the barrel to retain dimensions after plating. I would try just polishing it real good before I went to all the trouble and expense of chrome plating a barrel that was not.

I've never heard of anyone offering that. I think you need another Benelli; been there, done that.

Benelli's chromed bores sure are nice, aren't they? :)

Just make sure the barrel gets baked after plating! A barrel cracked from hydrogen embritlement would suck!

Indeed; as far as Im concerned, the Benelli barrels are in a league of their own. Why do you think I now want all of my shotgun barrels (bores) chrome lined? ;)

Insight-NEO,

To me, it doesn't make good economic sense to chrome a barrel that isn't expensive to begin with. I can understand the desire to want to keep the barrel clean, but really, what is the problem if you don't?

A shotgun barrel is a steel tube. Clean it when you feel like it and don't worry about it. I've never had any problem with a blued barrel rusting on the inside even with only modest attempts at keeping it clean, but so what if it does? The barrel is still 100% useable. Besides, it's no big deal to remove a little surface rust from the barrel in the unlikely event that it should get some rust.

So, my opinion is that your proposed "project" is an unnecessary waste of time and money. Of course, it's your barrel and your money so do whatever you like.

I have had zero internal barrel issues, much less problems, in 50 years with Remingtons, Brownings, Winchesters, Stevens, Mossbergs, Foxes, and Stoegers. I guess WD-40 isn't as bad as some people think.

Just clean it every now and then and you don't need a chrome lined bbl.

Remember, even chrome will rust if you never clean it.

If you don't think so, just look the next time you are in a parking lot at the chrome wheels on some trucks, they are rusting through the chrome.
