I've had a hankering for another .44 for awhile now, and after deciding that buying an elephant gun would be pointless (and after a severely bruised shoulder and a serious flinching problem from shooting my .500 handi rifle yesterday), I decided that a pistol would be a wiser purchase.
I looked at a nickel plated 29 that was drop dead gorgeous, but it had a 6.5" barrel, and I already have a 6.5" and wanted something smaller. I looked at both a 4" and 2 or 2.5" 329 too, and while I think the idea of a 26oz .44 is pretty cool, I don't have $839 to blow on something that kicks too bad to shoot it a lot, and I wouldn't want to spend that much on something just to primarily shoot .44 specials through it either, as I could just spend 1/3 of that much and get a charter arms instead.
They also had a performance center 29, but it too was a 6.5", plus it had a scope mount thingie and one of those ugly underlugs, so that was out. I originally wanted a 4" 29/629, but the 4" 629 I looked at just didn't feel right, so I ended up buying a 5" 629 classic.
I also fondled a desert eagle for awhile too, but I just couldn't bring myself to waste almost $1200 on something that doesn't fit my hand, and I'm not confident enough in my reloading abilities to be reloading for an auto yet.
I haven't shot my new .44 yet, but just from handling it, it feels a lot lighter and smaller than my 29 for some reason. I know the grips are definitely smaller, so that may be the reason, but this gun really handles nice for me.
After first dry firing it a few times, I actually thought the trigger was even lighter than my (supposedly worked over) 29 too, but then I compared both of them together, and my 29 is still a little better. Still, I'm quite pleased with the SA trigger pull of this gun.
Now for questions; What -model is this? It looks like a 6, but I can't tell if it's an 8 instead.
I don't plan on shooting super hot loads through this, but I want to shoot more powerful loads than I shoot in my old .44 (I only shoot super weak loads through that one). Is there any problem with shooting the 300gr loads listed in the hornady reloading manual? Obviously I won't go past the maximum, and will still start at the minimum, but will this cause any problems?
How about the lock? I know a lot of people hate the lock and disable or remove them. I don't really want to mess with it, as this is gun isn't something I'm likely to be packing for SD anytime soon, where a lock malfunction would really matter. I know a lot of the scandium guns had lock problems because of the recoil, but do I need to worry about the lock screwing up and freezing up the gun on this?
How about the finish? The reason I liked the nickel .44 I looked at so much was because of how "bling bling" it was. The guns like mine, with the regular stainless finish (or whatever kind of finish it is), look kinda dingy to be honest. Is there anything I can do to make the finish shine more, like by using some kind of polish or something?
thanks
