What is the difference in the Walther P99QA and P990? Both are supposed to be DAO.
How are the P99 series rated? What is the difference in the Walther and S&W versions of this gun?

Not real sure of the differences between the QA and 990 but the Walther 99 is generally considered to be of better quality then the Smith version.

What, if any, are the structural/design differences between the Walther and Smith?
Anyone else familar with the P99QA and the P990?

The QA model is "quick action", and uses the preloaded striker in single action. The O model is a DAO gun.

Further on the 990: It has a true DAO in that no slide action is required to preload the striker. Just give the trigger a good, LOOOOOONG squeeze and it will go BANG! The QA requires slide movement to preload striker, ALA Glock. Hope this helps.

Not sure which one's which, but one has a nice DA/SA trigger, while the other has one of the nicer DAO triggers available.

10-Ring,
In DA/SA I believe you're thinking of the regular P-99. I personally feel that the 990 has the best TRUE DAO available (but I traded mine to my dad for a target rifle. Priorities.). The 99QA is a Glock-esque action, with a decocker for field stripping rather than having to dryfire the mechanism.

Wanderinwalker has it right. The striker in the QA is partially cocked by the operation of the slide. When you pull the trigger, you can see the striker move to the rear until it fires. The trigger pull on the QA is lighter (and probably shorter) than the pull on the 990. Both are DAO, I believe, because the ATF classifies partially cocked guns as DAO.
I like my QA a lot.
