member rankings

Hi.
I was just wondering about the ranking of the members. I see that there are really only two ranks, new member and senior member. I don’t want to sound like an asshat and tell you something that maybe you have heard from others before. But, yes the great but could there be any other way of ranking members? I really think that would be great. It would be nice to see a thread that was started by someone that was a greater rank (650 post) rather than someone with a lower rank (16 post). I hope you can see what I am asking. Buy the way this is a great site, invaluable to anyone that has affection for firearms. Thanks.

"I hope you can see what I am asking."
Not really.
Why not judge the thread and the various posts comprising it by the content rather than the member's rank. Some members currently have less than 30 posts, yet their content is priceless when compared to others with many thousands of posts. And to answer anyone's question about that statement, no I do not have any particular member in mind for the latter, but I do have several in mind for the former.

There are so many people here that have so much info and they share it. I think that is great. There has been so much information that I have garnered here on guns that I have bought or did not buy that has saved me many headaches. I just thought it would be nice to see people get a “rank” that might be a nice touch. There could be many ways of obtaining them, rank that is, such as number of post, quality of post, member referral the moderators could give someone a rank increase. And the same thing could be done towards losing your rank, such=h as someone whose post are offensive or just plane ignorant. Some kind of reward for service. I’m not looking to change thing to try to make it hard on the people that run this top notch site. I’m just trying to do something nice for all the great people who give up there incredible information.

Harumph!
I guess I resemble that remark.
And it's FEWER than 30, Mal. :D

Post above is an example of a prolific postaphobe with a very high count.
Who also has imparted a wealth of information to one and all.
On the other end of the spectrum...
We have some pros in the firearms and ammo business that may not post much but when they do....they impart specific information of value.
The common thread is sharing knowledge while enjoying the camaradrie of a love for freedom, shooting, tinkering etc with others.
Rank.....don't need no steenkin rank. Can get that way myownself when workin in the sun. :D

I've seen some guys with member rankings of "Gremlin" and "Crotchety old guy". Did these guys get special treatment or are they doing something naughty?

There are a few exceptions to the standard user titles. I believe they are all in the moderator group, e.g., tyme is the 'Gremlin'; could just as easily be 'Guru'. But, who did you see with the title "Crotchety old guy"?

I can't for the life of me remember, but it was something along those lines.

You may have seen me with Miserable SOB for a few days, but I was soundly beaten around the head and shoulders for noticing that someone had turned the user titles, thus allowing me to change my user title. I was summarily demoted back to Senior Member...

Honest, titles and rank never really mattered to me. Wouldn't hurt my feelings If I had no "rank", or number of posts listed. If someone really wants to find out look at my profile. I ain't that big of deal.
Ident. of admin, mods, leaders and such need to be listed -members need to know as to whom to report to or seek advice from.
Shortening of some of the really loooong multiple lined sigs maybe a better concern...dunno

Come on Mike, it wasn't all that bad, was it? We kept the cat-o-nine-tails in the locker and used the bamboo sticks instead so there wouldn't be any scarring. See, we do have our soft side at times. ;)

"Holler when he couldn't change it back..."
Which would have happened never, Sam.
I AM a Miserable SOB.
I cultivate it, because I hate the human race so much.

All to often we will have a notable person or persons drop by to comment on a specific issue that they know ALL about. These guys are often not regular members and have very low post counts. Also i have seen a few people (not on this board though) with REALLY high post counts that are somewhat LESS than knowledgable. I really dont think post count has anything to do with how good of a source a person is.
