Seriously: the point of the so-called "assault weapons ban" is simply to establish a legal precedent for prohibiting a class of firearms. Once the precedent is established, it's almost child's play to expand the class.

Your typical anti-gun bigot activist sleeps snug at night whenever they can get a certain class of guns banned. Makes it easier to ban more guns 5 years down the road, 10 years down the road.
