if Arnold were a social conservative & held the same views (pro-life, pro gun, anti gay rights) as McClintock, would he have still won? I'm of the opinion that in CA, moderates have the best chance of appealing to the populous which is what polarized both McClintock & Davis.

Arnold won for one reason- he is Arnold S, star of the Terminator movies.

That's it- don't kid yourself.

I really think that the basis for much of Arnold's support was the simple fact that he was NOT a career politican.

After the Davis shenanigans, and the self-destruction of the Republican candidate in the last election, I think a lot of people were looking for a new alternative.

Everyone wrote Jesse Ventura off when he ran for Gov., and what all of the pundits missed was a very strong level of disgust with career politicans.

That's it. And also he never said anything about how he is actually going to "fix" california. so there were no positions to attack (he has no positions). I have a sick feeling this is going to be a train wreck.

It would be interesting to see a county by county red/blue map of 1970's California when Reagan was elected govenor vs. his opponents.

Also, what year did the urban SanDiego/L.A./SanFransisco/Sacramento population outweigh the country population?

And figures on the population by year of Northeren California, as defined by a line just south of San Fransisco v.s Southeren California.

I wonder if that would show anything significant?

I'm afrain you're right, bountyhunter. I'm hoping for the best, but expect that Arnold will soon realize that he's in the deep end of the pool.

Notwithstanding the warnings and bad vibes I encountered here and elsewhere, I voted for McClintock, and I'm proud of that; can those who voted for Arnold say the same?

Incidentally, when things turn worse in CA, don't blame me; I tried.

Arnie won for two reasons:

1. The sheer spectacle of having "The Terminator" as CA governor.

2. He is not a career politician.

That's my opinion and what I've gathered from talking to his supporters.

3. He smiles a lot and is affable.

4. He projects an engaging personality.

Arnold won for the same reason that bozo in Minn. won - pure celebrity power.

If I were still in the People's Republic of California, I'd have voted for McClintock; even so, I'd be extremely surprised to see Schwarzenegger do a worse job than Red Davis. Schwarzenegger may be a R.I.N.O, but I'm sure he's not a socialist parasite.

You did well, Californians!
