Primers $175 a box?

For a box of 1000 of course. Went to the local gun show yesterday and saw several tables with SR primers priced at $150 to $175. Could not believe it.
Place was packed.
Scored a box of Laser cast 45LC bullets (250gr, 500ct) for $40, and thought that was a good price.
What times we live in.....

That must have been for 5000 primers. They're usually $30 or less for a 1000. At least in my neck of the woods.

Yeah had to be 5000
Man, and I got mad for paying $65 for 5000 a couple of years ago.

Could have been, it was a white box just about the size of a Federal primer box (1000ct). I have never seen a 5K box of primers in any store I've been in around here, or elsewhere (it's always fun to stop in a gunshop on the road, even if I can't buy anything) , so that would be new to me.
Thanks for the responses.
dave from mesa - same here, but I'm glad I did now.

Yea, really, there is tremendous gouging going on.

Hopefully the same thing will happen to the people driving the price of primers up that happened to the jagoffs that drove oil to $140 a barrel.

I sure hope that was for 5,000 SR primers. That comes to $35/1000 which is a little high, but given the circumstances I can't blame the guy.
If it actually was $175/1000 the guy should have been beaten severely, I mean that is chicksh*t gouging if I've ever seen it.
I think a guy can buy new, primed brass for that.
This primer thing has gotten out of hand. I absolutely refuse to buy any from the clowns on gunbroker, even though I really need some SR primers. I just picked up a bunch of LR from my local gunshop, he's been getting them regularly. SR he says are being bought up before they make it to the outfit he buys from, probably by the *ssholes on GB selling them for ridicolous prices. I sure hope in another couple of months they are sitting on 100,000 primers they can't get rid of.
I only wanted to pickup my usual 1,000 for varmints this spring, but I don't need to shoot .223 so bad that I have to support that kind of foolishness. I'll shoot .17 hmr, heck it is just as fun.

yeah I would say that is for 5000. On friday I bought 1000 large rifle and 1000 magnum large rifle primers for 32.50 per 1k both were Winchester brand. They did install a limit of one carton of each per customer. He was crazy on ammo though they wanted $43 for a 500 round brick of .22 thunderbolts. I wont shoot that crap at .89 a box and I certainly will not buy them at 4.30 a box.

Edit my last post.
5000 is for a case. That's what I bought. Still can't believe they cost that much now.

Well, just to clarify, this was for a box, not a case. But I wasn't aware of any boxes of 5000 primers. I'm more familiar with the Win or Fed box of 1000 type of packaging.
And I was fairly certain I saw 1000 on the box, but I was walking by and wasn't about to get too close to that precious box of primers when I saw $175 on it - I did do a double take at the price. A few tables later I saw the exact same thing for $150. Pretty sure I saw another, but the place was packed, and getting a good look at anything was tough, unless you waited for an opening, or let yourself be herded along when things were moving.

Primer Hoggs,
What else can you say, 3 times the mark up.
350 for 5000? Look at the powders go, they are going fast. Was this part of the stimulus bill not one American saw hidden away?
I do have one question, what is your favorite all around powder for small .223 to .308?
I see a few left out there, just wondering.

I paid $35 for 1K CCI-34's couple yrs. ago & knew I was being gouged, but what was I going to do? :banghead:
What is a reloader going to do? I know I can't make a primer....... :cuss:
BTW- The store I bought from has since gone out of business. :neener:

At the current prices for components to reload .223, I may just get a .22lr conversion for my AR and call it a day. .22lr is still cheap down here, and I think I've got 10K rounds just sitting around.

At some of our gun shows they put a 1000 box on the table with a sign advertising the price per 5000. The cases of 5000 (5 boxes of 1000 in a cardboard box) are behind the table so they don't take up valuable real estate. Maybe Dave saw the 1k box advertising the 5k price.

I just picked up 1000 Winchester small pistol magnum primers today for $25.95. NO small rifle primers. NO standard small pistol primers. Looks like I'll be working some loads back up but, I'm happy to have primers.
All the Best,

I do have one question, what is your favorite all around powder for small .223 to .308?I've used IMR4895 in .223 and 30-06. I have an 06 load that will group 3 inside a quarter at 200 yds. Except for adjusting the sights, I haven't shot more because I hate to burn up my good hunting ammo at the range.
I didn't see a difference between 4895 and WC844 (H335) in 223, although H335 is supposed to be the better powder for it.

I paid $30.00 for 1000 small rifle CCI 400's a couple weeks ago.
I have seen gunbroker auctions for 1000 primers at very inflated prices.

Just got a shipmeent of 10K in Wolf small rifle primers today....$24 per thousand shipped. You just gotts wait till the normal sources get them in stock and then be lucky enough to know it before they sell out. Persistance is the key.....helps if you're on the forums a lot as someone will inevitably post it and then they sell out quick.
