I'm preparing for my next gun purchase and I plan on using it for ccw, problem is I'm stuck between these 2, the hk p7 and the s&w 242, I know they are oposite ends in terms of guns but I like them both alot, they're both good shooters, and I have tried waying the pros and cons of each to help me decide but its still difficult so I'd like to hear what you guys think.

The 242 is Ti, correct? Makes it a very light revolver. IMO it's important to practice a lot with your firearm, and from what I've seen a the range and classes, they can be very brutal on the shooter.

Honestly I'd look elsewhere for CC on both guns. The P7 is pretty large and somewhat heavy for CC, requiring a special holster. The light revolver is...light. I'd be done after shooting two cylinders out of it.

Checked out the Kahr line?

well the 242 is 19 onces, its light weight but shooting 38s with it is a breeze from what i hear, i haven't really looked into kahr, generally the only semi autos i'd consider buying are all steel and have something interesting about them that sets them apart from the rest in some way

I voted for the revolver. I carried the HK p7 M13 on duty for eight years and never warmed up to it. The ones I've seen for sale were over priced when compared to other makes of simi autos. However when my dept went to the HK p13 every ones scores went up, it was very shootable and we had a 500 round introduction to the new pistol. It is one of the most accrute simi autos I've shot, but I didn't like it. I was able to buy mine when I retired. I quickly traded it for a 1911 and cash. I like S&W revolvers.

I really like the P7, but it is a heavy little booger. I voted for the Smith for that reason. If the weight doesn't bother you, the P7 would be a fine choice.

Indeed?

A friend of mine carries a Para double-stack as a primary and a P7 for a BUG. He also carries two extra mags for each. It's nothing I want to carry (I carry a 642) but it works for him.

i'm surprised that the vote is even this close.

The P7 by far would be the better choice i have three of them and carry one as a back up to my Wilson CQB, they are not as ungainly as some will make it out to be. they are a steel fire arm which is far supeior to polymere or light weight materials since if you are gonna carry it you better shoot it as much as possible and i would much rather shoot an all steel gun then i would a light weight pocket pistol.

The issue is that the P7 is heavier, but the 242 is bulkier.

Even though you have seven rounds, 38 +P is kind of weak considering you're packing an L-frame revolver. Other models (airweights even) are good for seven rounds of .357 or five rounds of .44 Spl.

Nine rounds of 9mm +P beats seven rounds of .38 Spl +P hands down, especially in a more concealable package. I'd only go with the 242 if the extra weight of the P7 bothered you.

Actually, I'd tell you to get a good belt (http://www.thebeltman.net/), a good holster (http://www.miltsparks.com/images/Photos/VM-2_large.jpg), and quit complainin'. :)

I picked the 242 simply because it's not of a completely different "operating system". Shooting the P7 always causes me to stop and think for a second and then I realize that I have to simply squeeze and pull. However, that second of pause (AND the heel-located magazine release) will ALWAYS cause me to put the P7 aside.

I carry a P7 full time as my primary and it rocks. 2 things you gotta deal with:

1. you gotta practice with this gun, the operation is different than other guns and I almost shot myself trying to learn how to use it

2. Need a good holster. I've got a nice one and carry at 3:30 and barely notice it now.
