Here are a couple of pearls:

"“We get faster, stronger and more accurate shots that we just wouldn’t get with a double-action pistol,” said Tafolla, head of the Special Missions branch, III3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Special Operations Training Group. That means Marines can get off a first round faster, smoother and more accurately.""

"[...] .45 also is better able to survive harsh battlefield environments, Tafolla said. It can fire in dirtier conditions that would gum up the M-9; its heavier frame can take more abuse."

“They need a weapon that will be able to put somebody down now,” Tafolla said. “It all comes back to the energy you deliver to the target. Although the 9 mm is faster, the .45 is able to deliver more energy and achieve greater penetration. That’s what you have to have.”

hose of us who used the 1911 during wartime were obviously limited to hardball, but when we became civilians most of us switched to the H&G 60 208 grain swc bullet ahead of about 7.7 gr of Unique.
The .45 acp has just enough velocity and cross section to do the necessary damage to tissue. We are told by autopsy surgeons that destructon of tissue is the key to putting down an opponent.
Hellofa thought for normally docile people, but you just never know these days. And, as an Armenian, there is very little you can tell be about Mohammedens. My family tree is nothing but a withered twig that ends "Murdered by Turks, Kurds and other Moslems."

Speak for yourself Pistolsmith. Some of us that carried a 1911 into combat still use 230gr. FMJ Military Ball.
