Yugo AK Question

I ordered a Yugo M70AB1 and I don't think it has a side mounted rail mount. I have also heard that Yugo's have slightly different specs so aftermarket pieces don't always fit. What are my options to get a picatinny rail on somewhere on the Yugo?

Ultimak makes one for the Yugo M70s. There are some others, but IMHO, Ultimak is superior in the forward optic mount department.

There are probably some dust cover mounts somewhere, but those aren't very stable and most likely you will end up with a wandering zero.

I saw that Ultimak but after reading some of the fine print there seem to be some hassles and requires some modification. I wasn't all too happy with that.

Why would the eastern block optical attachment rail not work for you? They aren't hard to install, and any spec differences would be pretty easy to make up with either a drill bit or round file (hole position) or ever so slightly longer rivets (wall thickness).

Am I misunderstanding the question?

Is the eastern bloc optical attachment rail the little piece mounted to the left side of the receiver?

Is this one?

Yes, that's it.

If I may ask, what exactly do you want to do with the aforementioned Picatinny rail?

Put an optic on it.

The Yugo doesn't come with that rail attachment as pictured above. What is involved to affix one?

Drilling holes and pressing rivets.

If you want to mount a red dot, you could get an Ultimak or one of those aluminum quad rail handguards.

Drilling holes and pressing rivets.

Yup! That's about it. And you can then get any of the Eastern Block scopes to snap into it, or a Picatinny rail mount that attaches to it.

If you want to mount a red dot, you could get an Ultimak or one of those aluminum quad rail handguards.

Or the new Larue Iron Dot, and you don't have to have rails at all.

Is the receiver easy to drill? i.e. Do I need a drill press or will a regular drill do the trick?

Anybody?

Yes, the receiver is pretty easy to drill -- it's just sheet metal, after all -- but there is a little finesse in getting the angle (for lack of a better word) just right so that your base (or Russian scope with integral base) lines up reasonably well with the bore axis of the rifle so that you get full useful adjustment range on the optics. A friend of mine is quite a stickler about this and I've watched him tweak this (bore-sighting with the scope on the rail before drilling) with great care before drilling and setting the rivets.

You can always just slap it on, and you'll probably be fine. With some care you can do a "better" job and get the most out of one of the Russian scopes built to work with these rifles.

Make sure you have a plan for bucking the rivets before you start drilling holes. When I made AKs with some friends, we had to make our own jig for riveting on optics rails.

Personally, I'd go with an Irondot or Ultimak long before I'd mess around with retrofitting a side rail onto the gun.

The Ultimak rubs me the wrong way, I'm not sure why. I'm thinking I might just do the UTG quad rail to keep things uber simple. They make one specifically for Yugo's so it should be cake.

Anybody got experience with the UTG?

I haven't used one of their quad rails, but I did make the mistake of getting one of their side rail mounts. It sucked royally...wouldn't lock onto the rail at all. I returned it and bought an Ultimak rail, which has worked flawlessly for me.

Did you have to modify a handguard to fit under the barrel and Ultimak?

Ian

Nope, didn't have to do any fitting. Mine is on a Romanian WASR, FWIW, not a Yugo.

It fit just fine with the lower handguard? Their website shows all kinds modding needed to get it to fit because of the size of the clamps or something.

Yes, it really did fit without modifying anything.

Did you have a wood or synthetic handguard? Factory or aftermarket?
