I have 2 in 308 and 300 winchester mag(well, the latter's a 700 but not an LTR) - they're really good. Very fun, very accurate. Why'd you get it in 223 though?

I have the 700p in 223,and its a great gun no recoil and accurate as hell.plus ammo is very cheap.

Cheap ammo! :D

I'm just a paper puncher and have a Colt M4gery and will likely have a SAM5S carbine at some point, so even though I don't reload, .223 Remington will be pretty plentyful around here. I do have a 7.62x39 AK as well and simply wasn't looking to stock another caliber...well, not just yet anyway... :D

If you're just punchin' paper, SWFA has the Tasco Super Sniper scopes for $300-400, depending on which model you choose.
That'd be a good choice.

I'm gettin' one for my AR10.

I just got one as well, and have topped it with a Leupold M1. I am starting my load development tonight, and will report on my luck at the range this weekend.

Fit and finish of the rifle is excellent...

I've got one, too. It does not like the same ammo my ARs do. They're all 1/9, but the ARs like Black Hills 55gr soft points, the LTR likes 69gr Match Kings. Nice rifle, fits me just right.

When it comes to variable power scopes, is there a power-to-range ratio to rely on. IOW, if I want to shoot out to 100 yards, what's the minimum power I should consider. 200, 300, etc?

TIA

I've been "getting by" with a 6X on my LTR in 308.
I've otten 1.5" groups at 400 and the only time I've shot at 500 for accuracy my best 3 shot group was under 4" with two 3/4" apart.
There are lots of serious shooters that put me to shame using iron sights at those ranges.
It's really what you're comfortable with and can afford.

I'd be willing to pay to see a couple of those groups! ;)

I may still have the target.
Though it most likely didn't make the cut in my recent move.
I need to work up a new hunting load so, if the gods are with me,
I will post a pretty group from 4-500 yards.

I've got one. Shoots about .5MOA out of the box. Leupold 3.5-10x40 M3 on top, Mark 4 rings and bases.

MLC: That's some great shooting for a .223 @ 400 yds. with a 6-power scope! Wish I could witness somebody shooting like that. Have you tried any 5-shot groups?

I've been "getting by" with a 6X on my LTR in 308 .

I really appreciate the high quality responses to my posts.
They are not only well thought out but appropriate and insightful as well.
I don't think that there is anything extraordinary about a 1.5" 3 shot group at 400 yards with a heavy barreled 308 and in that case Federal Gold Medal Match 168's. I'm not making outlandish claims of 1/2" groups at 500 yards standing, unsupported. I was shooting from a bench either using a Harris bipod or sandbags.
As for the 6x scope as a hinderance, people shoot 1000 yards with iron sights, it is about having consistent sight picture, solid shooting position and paying attention to your trigger and breath control.
Wish I could witness somebody shooting like that.

I implore to go to the range and try it yourself, it is much more satisfying than playing the critical internet spectator.

MLC: I wasn't being critical. I read right past the ".308" in your post, as I was thinking ".223", as in the threadstarter. Nevertheless, I know that I couldn't shoot 1.5" @ 400 yds. with a 6-power scope with any rifle. I don't personally know anybody who can do that. I WOULD like to see you or anybody else shoot like that. I WAS serious about 5-shot groups. Most people I know who shoot for groups shoot 5-shot groups.

I AM aware that people shoot @ 1000 yds. with iron sights. I'd still like to see one of those guys shoot a 1.5" group @ 400 yds. with a 6-power scope with a non-custom, out-of-the-box LTR. I'm not saying you didn't do, just that I'd like to see somebody do that.

varoadking: First thing you'll need to do with that Remmy when you get it out of the box is adjust the trigger. If you don't know how, there are excellent instructions available on several websites. It'll have at least a 6# trigger out-of-the-box. You won't be shooting 1.5" groups @ 400 yds. with a 6# trigger! ;)

...post a link to the trigger adjustment threads if you can find one, would ya?

It is a bit stiff - but no creep - nice and crisp...

I took my LTR .223 out for the first time on Sat. Handloaded some moly Sierra 69s w/ RE-15 and got about 1 MOA at 200 yards. Not bad for the beginning loads. I did not have as much luck with the 55 v-max I tried next. Any thoughts or serving suggestions for you other LTR shooters out there would be appreciated. This with a Leupold 3.5x10-50 M1 scope. Incidentially, I just mounted the scope on Friday using Leupold QRW rings and bases and the first shot was a 7 ring. Nice setup for anyone looking.

My trigger was set to the lightest pull that the local smith was comfortable with. I'm pretty sure that it is under or at 3 pounds. Nero if you're ever in SE PA and have time to go shooting let me know. I'm not claiming to be able to get consistent 1/4 minute groups but even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time.
I just moved and my pc isn't hooked up yet but I have a digital pic of a 500 yard 3.5" 3 shot group. I only had 3 left of the 175gSMK handload. Shooting with the 6x at 500 requires using certain targets, I sprayed 9" paper plates with day-glow orange paint. With the fine cross hair of my scope I split the orange blob into equal quadrants, then shoot.
When aiming at tiny targets I've often seen the reticle twitch from the pressure spike of my pulse.
Good times, I need to get the loading bench set up again.

Walker - how do you like the scope?

Nero Steptoe
October 13, 2003, 12:16 AM
MLC: Thanks for the invite, but I doubt that I'll be returning to PA for some time. Of course, there's always the possibility that I'll convert to Amish, then PA might look pretty good.

One of my Remmy's is set @ 1#; the other @ 1.5#. My .223 VS shoots in the low 2's @ 100 yds, but I don't believe it'd do 1.5" @ 400 yds.

MLC, I've read that Olympic shooters train to learn to press the trigger between heartbeats, avoiding that spike.

Learning the self-control to have a slow pulse rate at the time of competition is a great help--although I'd imagine it's a bit difficult. :)

Thanks for the tip on the M3 - seems like that's what most folks are telling me... A lot of people like the M1 turrets, but I wanted the fast action M3 turrets. The M1 turrets give you a greater amount of precision with .25MOA clicks, but the M3 lets you go from 200 to 600 yards FAST! With the fluted, short barrel on the LTR, it wasn't meant to be the end-all of target rifles, so I built it into a compact, lightweight, quick rifle. I originally had a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 on the thing, and that was too much scope. I changed it out for the Leupy and have been very happy with it.

Mine is .308, by the way. I have a 700 in .223, but it's not an LTR.

Vari-X III - 3.5 - 10 x 40mm Long Range M3, M. Dot, Mat (51850)....$729

I was looking at one of these as well - what's the difference between the two - besides 350 clams...

VX - II 3 - 9 x 40mm Tactical, Mil Dot, Matte (54080)............................$379

TIA

Besides the obvious magnification differences, the Long Range scope has the side parallax adjustment and the exposed M3 turrets. Also, the Long Range scope has a 30MM tube for better light transmission.

Luepold VX - II 3 - 9 x 40mm Tactical, Mil Dot, Matte (54080) for $379.00. Free shipping no less.

This was too good a deal to pass up. It will be here Friday along with base and mounts. I was having a hard time justifying a scope that would cost more than the rifle!

I was more concerned with accuracy than quick changes. The .223 is a pretty flat shooter, so the drop compensator wasn't a prime concern either. If I were to zero at 200 yards, I'll be 1.4 inches high at 100 yards and .7 inches low at 300 yards. If I can get that close, I'll be pretty happy. I admit that the mil-dot reticle intrigued me enough to drop the extra $70 for it.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm looking forward to zero day...

You asked about the M1, I like it very much. Mine is a Mil dot reticle as well, and I have grown fond of it. I also have a Leupold VXII 4-12x40 AO with a Mil dot and really like it also. I love the turret knobs on the M1, IMHO the best part of the scope. My 4-12 has OEM target knobs, and I will never go back to a scope without. I will say that the VXII has just as nice a sight picture as the M1, and for half the price was clearly the better buy. You will be happy with your purchase, spend the extra $$ on other gear.
