i want to keep a pistol in a locked and bolted container in my car. i have a CCW. i've narrowed it down to a Ruger Six 2.75 barrel (with +p ammo) or a Glock 30 45 auto. i can't decide which one.

Which would you choose? (to help me decide).

Glock. I looked into a few options when shopping for a beater/car/truck gun, I ended up with a G19 over a CZ, SW autoloader, P series ruger, and a few others for several reasons.

1) I dont like glocks. If it does end up stolen, I'm only out the money, instead of a pistol I like or would grow on me (S&W, CZ). It would also be easily replaced with another glock that I wont care much for.

2) Its already ugly, so if it gets beat up more and ends up with more wear on the finish than my EDC pistol, its no big deal.

3) The finish is dern near bulletproof, so it'll hold up to neglect a lot better.

4) Really doesn't matter in your case since this is an auto vs revolver debate, but mags are easily found.

If you have a place in your truck where you can mount a holster, where its out of sight and easily accessible, I'd suggest doing so (my old setup (http://thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=4044789&postcount=29)). A fobus works well, I used a blade tech because I hung a light on mine (I dont like the fobus "light gun" holsters). Not only is it more secure* than it would be in a door pocket or console, it will keep the plastic sights from getting beat up. I recommend steel sights, at least a front (my rear sight has held up pretty well, however my front got beat up pretty quick). Don't keep it in the glove box with your registration. Not only could it result in a nervous LEO if you get stopped, but if you need it, its on the other side of the truck.

*By more secure, I don't mean less likely to be stolen. However it is less likely to end up flying in the event of an accident, and you wont have to worry about anything else you keep in that compartment getting in the way of your draw, or hooking the trigger and putting a hole in your floorboard.

I would buy the Ruger. If you leave a gun in the truck for any length of time they sometimes don't have the proper lubrication they need. A revolver is less sensitive to that than a pistol although a Glock is a really tough and reliable pistol. I'm a revolver guy so I usually pick the revolver but with good reason.

Even if you pick the Glock there's nothing wrong with a .45 Auto for sure... Actually, which are you more comfortable shooting? Which can you shoot more accurately? When you answer those 2 questions you have the answer of which to carry in the truck...

If it is just going to be a truck gun, I'd go with a Hi-Point 45. They cost hundreds less than the Glock, and it has a lifetime no questions asked warranty. They are ugly, so who cares if it gets banged up. It isn't going to hurt the looks of the thing.

The high point suggestion has merit, but I wouldn't be the proud owner of one, so that would be out.

Many on here act like it will get stolen in the first week it's in the truck. I'm nearing 50 and I haven't ever had my vehicle broken into and I don't think anyone in my family has ever had it happen, and I don't think I know of more than one person who has in my entire life.

But if you live where that happens regularly, maybe you should move.

I'm opposed to the idea of a "truck gun", but if you feel you need one I'm with mastiff. There is no such thing as a secure vehicle, so if you put a firearm out there to be stolen I would suggest the cheapest one you can find.

I am always baffled by the responses when this comes up. Just because it is in a truck I see no reason to buy some crappy defensive weapon. And if you lock it up in a container bolted down inside your locked truck, you have done all that is morally required to keep it out of the wrong hands. I'd buy the Ruger but that's only because I like them and am not a Glock guy.
The gun locked up in my truck is worth over a grand. It's in a holster locked up and it goes between being carried and being locked uo several times daily depending on where I can legally carry it. I see no reason to ever buy a Hi-Point. I wouldn't carry one even if i was a criminal. I'd rob a few party stores and buy a nice gun.

I bought my first GLOCK (G19) to answer exactly the question you've asked. And like Zack S says, it was because I considered the GLOCK an easier loss with which to deal in the event of a theft (gun and/or truck) than the loss one of my more expensive (custom) handguns. Well, I ended-up actually liking the ugly, plastic, little black-thing...so I bought a Ruger SP101 (3") as my replacement Truck Gun. Well, I'll be doggone if I didn't shortly develope a fondness for that Ruger as well! I guess I need to at least quit using "truck gun" as an excuse & simply carry what I want on my hip! ;)

Of your choices, I'd recommend the Glock.

If I can find another XD45 5" for less than $500 OTD, it will be my dedicated truck gun.

What are you most likely to need the truck gun for? Just a thought, but I'm thinking .357 is way better suited to shooting BGs in other cars than .45 ACP. You would only have 6 ready to go, but those 6 should be more effective through a car door or windshield.

If you must have a handgun in the truck, go for a used and reliable revolver, and keep it hidden/locked. Moving the gun in and out of the locked storage just tells someone you have a gun you leave in the truck - begging for a break-in.

Its true I have neighbors that I can see without driving anywhere, But my security issue with automobiles has nothing to do with geography. I have a gun safe made of steel bolted to a concrete floor. It has no windows for viewing. I keep my gun on my hip and if I do need to leave it behind (court, hospital, etc.) I have a small safe in the trunk of my car. I don't leave guns unattended if I can avoid it.

The only reason I don't always keep a rifle in my truck is that I am frequently visiting military posts.

At present, I have two manufacturers of autoloaders: Colt and Glock. I carry the Colts only when they do not have to be left in the truck. My Glocks are my leave-them-in-the-truck-while-on-campus pistols. For .45 ACPs, I have the 21-SF and the 30-SF. For 9mms, I have the 26, 19C, 17, and 34. Choose your poison.
