I saw a rifle Saturday that I had not read or heard of.
Ruger No 1
Stainless
7.62x39
Deluxe centerfire plinker?
Handy deer rifle?

Huh! Sorta interesting combination, but it strikes me as neither fish nor fowl. It's not a particularly good varmint round, and it's a marginal deer-getter--although those with single-shots tend to work harder at precision than do many people.

Ruger is doing a limited run of these rifles IIRC. IMHO it would be a great way to teach a beginning and cost-conscious rifleman. Firstly, since it is a single shot, they will take more care with each round. Secondly, the ammo is extremely cheap.

Strange indeed.
Bit pricy for a beginner's trainer.
Can't really think of a nich for it.

hmmm...well, if you handload and really want to explore the maximum performance limits of the 7.62x39....:scrutiny:
I have heard of M77's and of course mini 30's in that caliber, never a #1.
It actually wouldn't be a bad rifle for West Texas stand hunting. Load a softpoint for the deer that mosies by, and drop him without much meat damage. Load a FMJ mil spec round for turkey, and drop them with even less meat damage. Assuming of course, it's still legal to shoot turkey with a rifle in Texas!
