Anyone see any Hornady Critical Defense Ammo in 380

I wanted to try a box or two of Hornady 380 critical defense ammo. All the online dealers seem to be out of stock and the only sources I could find were on GB and wanted $40/box (about $20 is retail). Did not want to try it for $2 round!

Anyone see any available at regular retail anywhere?

I assume this shortage is just another result of our Obomination Stimulus Program.

Thanks in advance for any sightings.

Good luck finding it. My friend tried to order some from the local shop and they told her she was # 80 in line. Also called MidwayUSA and the b/o line was pushing 184 on the last call.

I'm not sure how long this craze is going to last but I'm going to wait it out. I got burned at Gander Mountain for $47 for a box of cci550's and I will never buy during a rush again. By the way - that reminds me, them SOB's at Gander jacked their prices up when they found out how hard it is to get primers. That is a "dirt bag" story for another post.

I haven't seen any .380 ammo of any stripe or manufacturer, self-defense or FMJ, for going on three months now. At this point, I'd sell my first-born male child for a simple box of Winchester White Box, just to get the feel of my PPK/S all over again.

As if anyone would have him.

You know, it almost amounts to "False Advertising." These companies advertise that they make all this wonderful ammo, and darned if you can find it sold anywhere. Every dealer I've talked to points to the manufacturer as the cause. They aren't producing the products for sale. Looking at ads, you can see noone has anything other than the odd box for sale.

It would be nice if the manufacturers would step up to the plate and fill the demand!!

I ordered two boxes from Ammunitiontogo.com, supposedly it was in stock, waited patiently for a couple of weeks then recieved an email saying it was backordered and would I accept Corbon Powerball instead... I reluctantly replied yes and got two 20 round boxes of Glasser 70Gr Powerball.

Oh well, I'm sitting on 640 rounds of .380 in a few flavors, + some open box. Have a little 95Gr Ranger SXT, 100 rounds of DoubleTap 95GR JHP, and 100 rounds of Fiocchi 95Gr JHP. My .380s are not really range guns anyway... what I have now could last me a long time.

Look at what "fake shortages" did for the Wii games.:scrutiny:

I got lucky last week and scored a box at a local gun shop. It was only about $20. I would have bought more, but I'm using it as duty ammo for my ankle bug (LCP), and I didn't really need more than that. Surprisingly, that shop had plenty of .380 and .40 ammo. The Wal-Mart down the street had nothing larger than .32 in handgun rounds. I've noticed that Cabelas.com only has a 0-1 week backorder delay on their .380 ammo. Not too bad, all things considered.

Around here you cant even buy 380 ammo. That is unless you purchase a pistol then you can buy one box of the cheap stuff.

i have one word for you guys, RELOAD! i am certainly glad i do. initially, i did it so i could afford to shoot more. but now, it is about the only way to get ammo. buy your bullets, and primers in bulk (1000 pcs., or more depending on your habit) and it will keep you shooting for a while.

I agree... I am positive that manufacturers are doing this on purpose. They see a rise in demand, they meet that rise with a cut in supply. The results are the painfully inflated ammo prices that you are seeing everywhere. I guarantee that if they wanted to, they could meet the growth in demand. But they don't want to... they know that if the shelves are empty, it will feed the panic. That way, they can sell less product at a much higher price.

My advice is do not patronize the gun industry right now. Stop buying new guns, and only buy the ammo you need... that doesn't mean 100K rounds on a pallet in your garage. Don't feed the frenzy.

The fact is that if you didn't need it before Obama, you likely don't need it now.

As long as we are willing to pay the price they are asking it will stay this way. We are the problem.

Not .380, but I just saw some 9mm Critical Defense at MidwayUSA. It said it was available, but by the time it completely loaded the page and I added it to my cart (3-4 minutes tops), it was "unavailable."

It's the first time I have seen it available anywhere.

I got a box of it a couple of weeks ago at a shop in Westminster, Ca. called the Stockade. I was back visiting friends. I was actually suprised to see the amount of ammo that they had, It was more than I had seen anywhere in a long time.

I honestly believe that in spite of all the fancy bullets, none of our commercial US made self defence loadings have anywhere near enough powder in them, they are truly weak loads.

I have found custom 102gr Golden Sabre +ps which would be perfect but I wouldn't carry a custom handload, and then there's Double Taps +p Gold Dot or Buffalo Bores solids.

But you can keep the others, and that includes the Hornady load.

Just too weak, .380 is capable of much more, the Santa Barbara loads showed us the way.

For the last 17yrs I think most of the people I know thought I was somewhat cooky for buying large quantities of ammo in bulk when it was cheap, asking for ammo for christmas and birthday presents. I was usually the only one picking up all the spent brass when we went shooting. No amount of explaining, reasoning, or even begging could get them to understand. However They sure don't think I was cooky anymore. I am just sitting back watching the madness.

It sure alot easier to stomach $2.75 per box .223, $5.50 per box .308, $6.00 .38 special, $13.25 Gold Dot .45 ACP, and $16.00 .45 Long Colt all brass cased reloadable. That is just a few reciepts I pulled out just now.

I did buy a couple of boxes of .44 mag this year, that hurt.

I think if I did not already have plenty of ammo I would just shoot, .22's and maybe practice up on throwing clay pigeons in the back yard with the shotgun and wait till all of this blows over. I would not pay these prices.

I do feel bad for the really young shooters who have not had a chance to prepare. But, anyone over say 25yrs old who is low on ammo has no one to blame except themselves. Sometimes you have to prioritize, for most everyone who has had ammo stockpiled prior to November 2008 it has long been a top priority.

A few months back I saw some at the range. I was able to get the critical defense in 38 Special. The range had several boxes and was not trying to hold anyone up. He did get 2 cases of .380 in last week and it was gone in a day. Byron

I bought a box the other day. They only had one and the owner of the gun shop I buy from most often saved it for me. He only had the one box though and it was his only .380. He did not gouge me on it and that is why part of why I buy from him. At a different shop I saw several boxes of 38 special 110 gr critical defense ammo. I picked up a box for my new LCR.

Take it for what its worth, but I read where the ammo guys on concentrating on the big 3 rounds, .45, .40, and 9mm.

I bought an LCP in March and still haven't been able to get some HP that I want. I want some of the Hornady loads, but Midway only has them in stock for a day, then gone the next. None of my local guys carry anything like this, so its mail order only. And I refuse to order 1 box here, 1 box there. So now, my LCP is carried with WWB. :uhoh:
