Cosmose October 8, 2003, 10:20 PM hi, i've been pondering what my next purchase would be and i think it'll be a ruger single action. i want somthing bigger than a 357mag. i don't know maybe the convertible 45long colt/45acp or either 44mag, i want a good woodsman. and i just wonder what ya'll thought would make a good woodsman?

Jim March October 8, 2003, 11:04 PM As long as you're not dealing with the Griz or Polar bears, either caliber is just fine.
The resurgence in the 45LC has put stout loads on the market fully equal to the 44Mag. Think "Cor-Bon" and "Buffallo Bore" for starters. If you're not a reloader, 45LC "cowboy action plinking fodder" is pretty common and 45ACP common as fleas.
You'll find a broader range of hot fodder for the 44Mag. But for general practice, it's going to be more expensive to feed than 45ACP.
Upshot: given the choices, I'd personally go with the convertable regardless of whether or not I reloaded.
Cosmose October 8, 2003, 11:11 PM thanks for the info. i don't reload. and i won't be coming up on bears (not in alabama) the most woud be a panther, they have seen several close to were i live
C.R.Sam October 9, 2003, 01:25 AM .45 Colt / .44 Mag.
Both great cartridges.
Since you want to go Ruger single action, I'd opt for the .45Colt/.45ACP combo gun.
Gives you a feral boar whomper and a cheap to shoot weapon in a single package.

Thumper October 9, 2003, 06:44 AM Sam named my woods gun. I prefer the Stainless Blackhawk with a 4 5/8 inch bbl.
If you reload, you can approach .44 mag performance. Very versatile.
Brian Dale October 9, 2003, 10:04 AM I sure used to like shooting my aunt's Blackhawk in .45LC. It was one of the most enjoyable revolvers I've fired (past tense only b/c I don't live near them now).
Wedge October 9, 2003, 01:09 PM I have the Blackhawk in .45 Colt / .45 ACP and love it. I don't reload (yet) and being able to shoot the .45 ACP made the gun really affordable. Plus, I don't feel undergunned when I have the .45 ACP cylinder in with some nice personal protection ammo. I am going to get some hunting ammo for the colt very soon and try that out.
Brian Williams October 9, 2003, 01:12 PM I know many do not like Taurus but the 4" Tracker in 45 colt is great. Small, lightweight, quick to target, large bore, gripper grips. But alas it is a Taurus, a 5 shot S&W L frame would be the cats nuts.
Cosmose October 9, 2003, 09:52 PM can you shoot 44 russian out of the 44mag? if so do ya'll know of anybody still making it? thanks for all the info.
C.R.Sam October 9, 2003, 10:51 PM 44 Russian works out of .44 Special and .44 Mag.
Think Old western Scrounger would have the Russian ammo.
Why not just shoot .44 Special tho ?
Lot cheaper for store bought or buyin cases for reload.

Cosmose October 9, 2003, 10:59 PM i was just curious about velocity and ft-lbs, and if you could shoot it.:)
Cosmose October 9, 2003, 11:05 PM man, that stuff is 57$ a box:what:

Brian Dale October 12, 2003, 01:22 AM Wow! Singing Swordsman, did you take those?
riddleofsteel October 12, 2003, 01:45 AM
Brian Dale October 12, 2003, 02:30 AM Sorry, it was s'posed to be clever; I guess the joke's on me. Your sigline is from Song of Solomon and it discusses men with swords.
Sometimes when I try to be a wit, I only get half-way there. :uhoh:
I like the photographs! Nice layout, great guns, cool knives.
riddleofsteel October 12, 2003, 03:10 AM Thanks
I guess it went over my head.
Cosmose October 12, 2003, 09:27 PM i really like those grips what kind are they?:)
riddleofsteel October 12, 2003, 09:50 PM Thanks
Both the Blackhawk and the Mountain Gun wear Sambar stag grips by Eagle. This material is getting hard to find these days. Like so many things I wish I had bought a shoe box full of them back when they were cheap.
I am a sucker for stag, bone and rare wood grips. I have been known to actually buy guns that I had a nice set of grips for.
