how would i obtain class 3 or nfa privileges to shorten my shotgun barrels to 14-16" or so? and how would i do it so i could do it at will? or does it go weapon by weapon basis? ive never had any desire to do so before so ive never really looked into it. i'm in the state of utah...anyone with experience on the matter and the pros and cons please feel free to chime in. i think my mossberg 500atp would really great cut down to the mag tube's end (16") but obviously i want to do it legally.

You'd need to register the weapon you wish to have with a short barrel - in my case, I registered a Remington 870 on a Form 1 Application to Make and Register a Firearm. In UT, you can own a SBS (short barrel shotgun).
You will need to fill out a Form 1 in duplicate, a citizenship card, a fingerprint card, and send all that off with a check for $200 to the BATFE. www.titleii.com has the forms you'll need, and you can PM me if you need a further walkthrough on the process.
I do suggest not bothering with the Mossberg unless that 2" is worth $200 to you. My 870 has a 12" barrel.

For each gun you wish to have under the NFA - $200 one-time tax, and the NFA stamp ONLY applies to that one weapon. There is no overall "license" to own NFA, there is no BATFE inspection, etc.

I will politely suggest that this be moved to the NFA forum - the folks there can best answer your question
IMO, to go to all that trouble for 2 inches or so, frankly isn't worth the aggravation and expense....now a Sherbu Shorty might be a different story....

My 870 is 12", not 16" - that's 6" less, not 2".
Anyway, it works just fine, I simply put a new bead, cut and crowned the barrel, and reblued. It's been great, really - we've even shot skeet with it! :D
