hunting and fishing in the ashville nc area

Hey guys I'm moving up near asheville next year to go to school for my wildlife management degree. Since I'm moving to pretty much the other end of the state I gotta find some new hunting and fishing grounds. Are the smokies open for hunting? I know there is some great fly fishing on that end of the state so I hope to take that up again
