Anyone else catch this story about Maryland's first lady shooting her mouth off? Sorry for the pun.

Woman is speaking at a conference and goes on a tirade about how bad pop culture is for her 6 year old son and states she would shoot Britney Spears if she had the chance. Why don't you manage your kid's behavior and stop blaming "pop-culture" you socialist bitch! He's probably a little monster.

Betcha she is an anti too!!! That's what's got my knickers in a bunch.

I did catch a little blurb on the radio this morning, said she was trying to backpedal on that little remark:D

Not coming to her defense - BUT, this whole thing just shows you how PC this world has gotten. She was obviously only using a figure of speech, but everyone is up in arms as if they actually believe that she was suggesting using a gun on Brittany. Just goes to show how outright stupid people can get when certain words are used (such as "shoot", "gun", etc..).

I've read a bunch of stuff about the "shoot Britney" comment, but I have yet to read what she actually said, let alone in context.

Does anyone know what her full comment was?

BTW, Maryland Governor Ehrlich was a Republican last time I looked. :scrutiny:

I saw an interesting argument on TV about 20 years ago between some anti-gun nut lady and George Hamilton (the guy with the perpetual sun tan). Turns out he is a gun afficionado. The woman becomes hysterical and says something like: "You don't understand... if I'm angry I might take a gun and kill somebody just because I'm not thinking straight!"

George thinks for a minute and says: "Really? Hmmmm...... you probably shouldn't own a gun then."

I’m perplexed by her comments. We have a 5 y.o. daughter and a 4 y.o. daughter, and neither has the faintest idea who Brittany Spears is.

Yep Ehrlich is a republican and so far the best chance the state has had for getting rid of some of the crap gun laws we have, or at least not adding anymore.

I heard a tape on the news of the comment. She stammered and stuttered while carrying on about Britney Spears and said exactly that--"If I had a gun, I'd shoot Britney Spears." The comment does not bother me. I don't care one way or the other. The problem is that she is obviously blaiming Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, et al for the problems kids are having today. Not the way I see it. If parents are responsible and willing to take a stand against kids we'd all be better off.

I read this in the paper this morning, and there is an added wrinkle: the conference she was attending was one to prevent domestic violence.

First lady's comment draws criticism
Mrs. Ehrlich apologizes today for joke she made about shooting Britney Spears
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sun staff and wire reports
Originally published October 8, 2003, 6:12 PM EDT

Maryland first lady Kendel Ehrlich apologized today to Britney Spears and said she regrets saying she wanted to shoot the provocative pop singer.

The first lady, a former Anne Arundel County public defender and Harford County prosecutor, was speaking at a domestic violence prevention conference last week when she said: "Really, if I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, I think I would." An audiotape shows she laughed after the remark.

Speaking in Queenstown before an appearance at a charity golf tournament today, Ehrlich said: "I really regret making the statement. It was offhanded, it was in jest and it was inappropriate and I know better."

Ehrlich said that the controversy has obscured the point she was trying to make -- that it's difficult to raise confident young women who will stand up against domestic violence with so many negative images coming from popular culture.

She said she'd like to apologize to Spears personally and suggested that she come to Maryland for a possible concert to raise money for domestic violence awareness.

Yesterday, Ehrlich said the comment was made "inadvertently" and said she stood by her sentiment that the navel-baring temptress is a poor role model for children.

In her speech, Ehrlich said that some domestic violence could be prevented if women were able to shake their dependence on abusive men and were better prepared to care for themselves and their children on their own.

The entertainment industry, she said, does a poor job of portraying women as independent figures.

Her comment was reported in the Frederick News-Post, and the sound clip aired Monday on WFMD-AM, a radio station in Frederick County. By yesterday, it was receiving widespread attention in the Baltimore area and was picked up by national television networks.

Kendel Ehrlich's office released a statement yesterday that stopped short of apologizing.

"As a working mother raising a four-year-old son, the first lady has concerns about the negative influences that the entertainment industry can have on young children and teen-agers," said the statement. "During a public appearance, she inadvertently used a figure of speech to express those concerns."

Leah Barrett, executive director of CeaseFire Maryland, a group that promotes handgun controls, said jokes about shootings were particularly inappropriate at a domestic violence forum. Abuse victims could be facing gun threats, she said.

"That's an unfortunate choice of words," Barrett said. "I kind of feel sorry for her, but she is in a public position, so she has to be aware of the impact her words can have."

Spears, 21, is developing an ever-racier image. She recently posed topless for Rolling Stone magazine and kissed Madonna during the MTV Music Awards.

Her label, Jive Records, released a statement yesterday decrying the remark.

"Since this unfortunate comment was made at a domestic violence prevention conference, it seems that Mrs. Ehrlich has shot her own self in the foot by promoting violence," it said.

WFMD reporter Paul Turner said reaction has been muted since his report aired. "For what it's worth, our station has not gotten a lot of feedback on this," he said.

Sun staff writer David Nitkin and the Associated Press contributed to this article.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

i would of prefered she said:

"Really, if I had an opportunity to tar and feather Britney Spears, I think I would."
or
"Really, if I had an opportunity to pin a scarlet letter on Britney Spears, I think I would."

Yup. If parents were responsible and willing to take a stand against kids there wouldn't BE a Britney Spears!

Along with a lot of other garbage.

'Course, these days there are a lot of 'parents' whose parents didn't so they don't have a clue themselves...

Double standard - but what'd you expect?
Now if George Bush had said that you'd never hear the end of it.

Um, you're right there is a double standard here but not what you (and others here) seem to think it is. Here in MD you can't seem to get away from this story if you watch or listen to the news. I'd bet if former Gov. Glendenning's wife said this it would have been buried on page 10 of the Sun. However, since the Ehrlich's are Republicans (and according to most MD Democrats, far-right-wing Republicans) you can't get away from the "news".

Was unaware that "being a poor role model" was grounds for execution - Maryland really is tough on crime! :uhoh:

"During a public appearance, she inadvertently used a figure of speech to express those concerns."
Of course, if Ms. Spears made the same "figure of speech" about Mrs. Erlich...nevermind, pretty much the same media uproar. Now, if I made the same "figure of speech" I don't think Mrs. Erlich would be quite so "understanding."

I don't follow Ms. Spear's career other than I've seen her on TV/magazines, etc., but, from the comments of some THR members, she must be singlehandedly corrupting America's youth! We "gun nuts" are always defending our right to keep and bear arms, but some on this board(who probably represent a lot of the MORAL MAJORITY)are ready to harm her in some fashion, as if she is a real danger. To quote Willy Nelson, "If you don't like the way I look, turn away."

Britney Spears' dad has admitted pulling a gun on four teenagers trying to see her childhood home.

Jamie Spears says he always carries his silver gun with him as a security measure.

The four teenage fans say they were also surrounded by guard dogs when they visited the house in Louisiana.

Mr Spears moved back to the house after he and Britney's mum Lynn split up, reports the Daily Express.

Asked if he pulled a gun on the girls, he said: "Yes sir, I did. I carry a gun with me. I keep it right here.

"If I'm alone and you come in my driveway, come on my property, that's what I'm going to do.

"With the death threats we get, the thousands of people that come here, yes sir, that's what I do."

One of the fans, 17-year-old Beth Stevens, said: "To have this happen was a shock. Britney's dad was really angry."

This is extremely silly. Britney is a ditz who ineptly rips off old R&B vocal riffs, wears outfits less interesting than what Cher wore on prime-time TV in the 1970s, and apes dance moves that have been around since Elvis was still skinny. As a destroyer of Western civilization, she's got to be pretty far down the list.

When Congressman Ehrlich was running for Governor of MD, he was asked if he owned a gun in a radio interview (1500 AM). He said "no", his wife (Kendel) would not allow it.

I thought that was rather hen-pecked position to be in. And, irresponsible too. Ehrlich told who ever was listening that his home was basically defenseless.

He now has about 20 State Troopers guarding him.

Ehrlich's position on gun control is Maryland is basically we got more than enough gun related laws. He wants to see better enforcement like Richmond's Project Exile.

He also thinks the assualt weapon bans are stupid because the bans addresses a limited scope of firearms that function just like many others. Cosmetically, they look a little different.

Since I carry a gun, I wouldn't make such comments about anyone at anytime. I find it to be in extremely poor taste. I too noticed that the entertainment industry does not seem to be lacking in independent females, but would actually suspect there are plenty of independent females in the industry.

Britney Spears probably isn't the prime source of the moral quagmire that we seem to have found ourselves mired in, although she ain't helping much. She is kind of a floozy, and I think she's a lousy example for girls. Lita Ford is a better role model, IMO.

Our parents probably had the same thoughts about the stuff we listened to when we were younger, though. I had an in-depth discussion about heavy-metal and devil worship when I was in high school with my mom one time.

FWIW, she kind of seems to be losing her popularity. Hopefully she'll turn out to be just another teeny-bopper flash-in-the-pan-remember New Kids on the Block and Tiffany? Loooong gone.

Still..............

I'm glad I'm a metalhead.
