I am 100% in the SIG Sauer camp.......................................except on this one. P7M8 is simply amazing as a 9mm carry gun. It is in a class all it's own.

Perfesser,
I never thought of the Mode 39 as being all that compact, but it's been a long time since I've handled one.
How does a 39 stack up in size against a 3913?

Add the Sig 225 to the list.
I agree, the P225 is a worthy contender. I originally thought about adding it, but didn't want to take up two slots for SIG.
I can't edit the poll now, but if the moderator feels like changing the first slot to "SIG P239 / P225" that would be fine with me.

I'd prefer a Commander or "Commanding Officer" sized 1911 in 9x23 with a Titanium frame for this purpose, not any of the listed choices.

I think its a stretch to say the P225 is a compact 9mm.
Its more like mid size, really, not much different than a Glock 19

I think its a stretch to say the P225 is a compact 9mm.
I wouldn't really call the P225 "mid sized".
Factually speaking, the dimensions of the P225 fit between the P239 and the P228.
But, I agree with you. I wouldn't exactly call it "compact" either.

Of those, the P7, but I think the smith CS9 is a worthy contender.
singlestack9
October 9, 2003, 06:45 PM
I left the CS9 off the list because I don't prefer handguns that don't offer a full 3 finger grip. The CS9 leaves my pinky dangling.
caz223
October 9, 2003, 07:15 PM
I see.
The last time I handled one, I didn't have a problem with it.
The CS9 magazines have a pinkie rest that works fine for me.
They also, of course, accept 3913 magazines, and CS9 magazines can have the pinkie rest removed, and a flat base installed.
I tried shooting it with flat base magazines, and I didn't think that I would like it.
I shot better with the flat base magazines, and the 3913 magazines.
(Don't ask me why.)

Tough choice...
For me, the Sig 239 and the Kahr are not in the same size catagory. While I would agree, the Kahr is a single stack that is "compact", I would probably put the Kahr in a "sub" compact classification.
With my nit-picking aside:D , I would probably have to choose the Kahr over the SIG for all practical purposes. The quality of these two makes is about even, but the size and cost issues give the kahr the edge. That said, I am NOT giving up my P225 anytime soon!!!
God Bless

Welcome to THR Singlestack!
I'd go with the Kahr, but that's because I just happen to be in the market for a small pocketgun right now and the Kahr P9 is probably the lightest in that list.
If I was just looking for a fun shooter, I'd probably go for the Sig or H&K since their larger size and more weight allows more of a purchase and better recoil control. Plus Sigs and H&Ks are just cool. ;)

You could always save a couple hundred bucks, get all the quality of the 3913, give up the ambidextrous safety and get the S&W 908.

October 10, 2003, 12:23 PM
I like the P7M8 alot, but voted for the Smith 3913/908 series, just because I like them so much. I'd look at Alan Fud's picture, and then shop for a used 3913 that looks similiar to those (no rail, but with the full size 8 round grip). The 908's are good buys too, it just takes a bit more work to find a holster & night sights. Both 3913's & 908's are really accurate, reliable, comforting & comfortable. These are very good single stack 9mm's.

I noticed the 3913TSW comes only in a stainless finish.
Anyone here actually like stainless finish for a CCW piece?
I wonder why S&W doesn't make a version with some sort of blackened finish?

Do you also dislike the DA first shot of the SIG P239 or the Walther P5?
Alan Fud
October 11, 2003, 06:42 AM
I actually considered getting the P7 back in the early 90's but having been exposed to traditional DA/SA auto's since the early 80's, I found the P7 much harder to get use to.
S&W makes both stainless ...

... and black ...

... autos. Having lived in Florida, I prefer the stainless steel models because they are LESS likely to rust ...
http://fud-files.netfirms.com/image/private/guns/f01.jpg
... Just as an FYI, the (older model) 3913TSW without the rail (see photo above) holds one less round than the (newer model) 3913TSW with the rail (see photo below) ...

"Do you also dislike the DA first shot of the SIG P239 or the Walther P5?"
No, I didn't like the fact that on the 3913, I couldn't cock the pistol and make it SA on the first shot. Many of my pistols are SA only, BHP, 1911, C-96, P-08. But I do own several DA/SA like the Walther P-5 you site above and several CZ-75 variants, Makarovs, etc.
I also had a S&W 915, one of the "Value Series" hicap 9MM S&W's, . Hated that one too. At similar or less pricepoints I find the CZ line much better, but that is just my preference and I know this thread is about single stacks.

Unless you (while pointing downrange) squeeze the trigger a little until the hammer lifts enough to cock it by hand. Or replace the bobbed hammer....
Just for grins here's a comparison of the S&W 3913 (older model, top) and more recent Chief's Special 9.

As much as I love shooting my CZ 75B, I am not the only one to have FTE problems with this otherwise great pistol: while it was back for warantee repair at the factory(2nd time), I bought a S&W 910s...the stainless version of the "value line": thousands of rounds later, ZERO malfunctions, good accuracy and an extremely quick-resetting trigger...it feeds ANYTHING I load into it. My opinion: I'd stake my life on a S&W semiauto....the 908 is a single-stack smaller version of the 910 and the Chief's Special is even smaller.

Although I'm a certified SIGaholic, and would love to see the 225 in the running, I voted Kahr K9. In fact I traded my original auto 9mm CCW, the 239, for my trusty Kahr K9elite98.
I am in receipt of a P7 PSP, but have yet to trust my knowledge of the Hk's manual of arms, and haven't a holster for it in which I could attempt legal CCW.

I voted for the P7M8.
In my book, it just edges out the P-225/239 and the 3913 as the king-mack-daddy of single-stack toting nines. (The Kahrs, swell pistols that they are, have just never really gotten along with me, despite the occasional desire for an MK9... :uhoh: )

Tamara, I bought the MK9 when it first came out. I thought that I was going to love it and that it was going to be my favorite CCW. I tried to like it but I just couldn't and ended up selling it. It shot well but for me it had too light of a trigger to carry without some sort of safet on it. Just MHO.

I bought a brand new shiney P7M8 many years ago and I really wanted to love it. I really wanted it to be my carry weapon of choice. But I never was all that thrilled with it for some reason. Sold it. No regrets. I'm now very, very happy with my Kahr K9!

P7M8 or P7 PSP. I have and use both. I like the PSP a bit more for carry as its got the mag release in the heel. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but neither is a glass of Cabernet or single malt scotch.
I'm surprised the Walther P-5 is not in the survey, not that it would change my vote, but still a nice single stack 9MM.
