Looking for a .22 revolver

I need a good plinking gun, and I want it to be a revolver. My father is going to be buying one for me for my birthday, and I don't expect him to pay more than $500 for it. What are some good ones you can suggest? I was thinking about a Taurus M94, but this thread (http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=438647) had me worried. Not interested in single action btw.

I know that S&W makes a double action .22 revolver (model 17,18,63). If you can find a used Colt diamondback, they are definitely keepers. Charter Arms makes a Target Pathfinder model in double action as well. Hope that helps.

I once had a single six hunter that I wish that I had not sold. It was the most accurate handgun that I have ever owned.

The S&W K-22 Masterpiece is an excellent DA 22 revolver. Beginning in 1957, they were assigned a two digit model number designation (retaining the K-22 label) as follows:

K-22 Model 17, Target Masterpiece. 6" barrels are the most common, but some had 8 3/8" tubes while some later guns had 4" versions available.

K-22 Model 18, Combat Masterpiece. 4" only, and rarer/harder find, and therefore generally pricier.

Finding either (especially the 18) under $500 will be a big challenge. These guns are highly sought after, but they are worth every penny, IMO. If this is going to be a birthday gift, I'd offer to kick in a C-Note or two just to get one of these fine revolvers.

Here's my Model 17, made in 1959. Got it over 2 years ago for $430, a fair price at the time. Today it would be $500+ in its condition (about 97%).

You can also look at the S&W model 34 and 35. They are the blued or nickel J frame version of the model 63.

S&W makes some great .22 revos on the K and J frames. Finding a good one under $500 could be tough. The last 17 I saw, in very nice shape, was $600.

everyone should have a 22 in there collection, and there are quite a few to choose from, if you want a double action, all of the ones mentions are great, and the taurus you mentioned is a nice looking gun as well, I know they get slammed a lot, but I've had great luck with mine. Good luck &let us know what you end up with.

My first handgun was a Ruger Bearcat. I still have it, I still take it to the range from time to time, and I still enjoy shooting it. Better yet, I've added two Bearcats to the collection, and I've also gotten one for my son. In my estimation, you just can't top a Bearcat for fun, simplicity, reliability.

That havaing been said, experiment with some various makes and models and find the one that best fits your hand and eye. That is the gun you want to buy.

S&W Model 17, K-22 Target Masterpiece,
Patridge front sight, adj. W&E rear sight,
with Target Hammer and Target trigger.
S&W Model 18 K-22 Combat Masterpiece, 4" Bbl. with
plain ramp front sight, and same adjustable rear
but standard hammer & trigger.

I had a Model 18 - my first handgun, it served me well on
the farm in my teens curing the '60s.

I've got the S&W 617 6" bbl. 10 shot sylinder, but it's over budget
for you.;

Those are the K-(medium ) frame .22s

J-(Small) frames
Model 34 "Kit" gun blued steel
Model 63 is the Stainless version of the 34
Model 43 is the "Kit" gun with an aluminum alloy frame

& today's
Model 317 Ltweight snub and a 3" Bbl. version, 8 shot cylinder
MOdel 63 - Stainless Steel & 8 shot cyl. was
re-introduced last year, but only a 5" Bbl. option.

NOte the 351PD, 51 and 651 are .22 RF Mag.

FWIW - 2 years ago I paid $629 for my 617. Most
I've spent on any of my S&Ws.

You might find a 617 used cheaper than a 98% Model 18.

Thanks for all the replies, I will definitely look at all the S&Ws mentioned. I can always throw in some of my own money if it is too expensive.

Bought mine from a friend back in 1984 NIB for $225. It's a very solid .22 with smooth action and very accurate. Highly recommend it.

I have a Ruger SP101 in 22. I don't think they make it any longer, but it is a great gun if you can find one.

Have you considered the Taurus Tracker in .22LR? It's built on the same frame that they use for the other Tracker chamberings.

Get the Taurus Tracker .22. I have one, it is a great plinker, has adjustable sights, and a really nice trigger. It is accurate as well. It wll hold 3" groups at 50 yards. Maybe even better if you use a rest. They can also be had new for around $300 or so.

Here's a couple no one has mentioned; they're usually available on Gunbroker, et al.

The first is an H&R 676 convertible. It's a double action six shooter with the option of magnums. Barrel lengths run from 4" to 12". Mine's a total tack driver with the magnums. I can pop a soda can at 100 yards with this thing. You can get a nice one for $250 on Gunbroker.

This is a High Standard Double Nine convertible. It's DA and has a nine round cylinder. These go for a little more because of rarity but, man, they are cool. I prefer shooting the magnums in this one, too.

There's always a good Taurus Model 94, nine shots of .22LR, you can get it in ultralite snubbie or in standard steel with various barrels.. I have the model 941, which is the .22 Magnum, with 4" barrel, good compromise between a trail gun and SD... shoots straight, although the DA pull is Herculean.. :-) SA is crisp and light.. the model 94 is in the $280-$300 range as well.

Thanks for pointing that out. Wouldn't mind getting that in 12" :D

I own 4 Taurus firearms, including the 94. Unfortunately, the 94 was the only one that has ever had a problem. It was bad out of the box, and got sent back immediately. Since getting it back, it has functioned 100%, and I am very happy with it.

Going to have side with the "find a S&W" guys here.

I found this little jem for $500 a couple of months ago. S&W M-18-4, 4" .22LR, 22 Combat Masterpiece. It's one of my favorite shooters. A fellow shooter, after trying it out, asked, "How much you want for it?" To which I replied, "I don't think I'll ever part with that one!" :D

The smooth Ahrend's stocks are my addition, and sorely needed on a K-frame IMO. It came with Magnas, which are too small even for my hands.
